Hi I use the Resmed Ulntra Mirage and I am developing a sore on the bridge of my nose. Any suggestions as to using a bandage or ointment or what?

Any chance you can use nasal pillows?  They are extremely comfortable, and eliminate almost all claustrophobia problems.

I use a very small amount of vaseline in each nostril, and have no had any sores or discomfort in almost two years.

If you're developing a sore, I would presume you've got one of the following:

     - a contact allergy with the mask material,
     - a rubbing-related sore due to a misadjusted mask, or
     - the wrong mask for your face structure.

For a contact allergy with the mask material, nasal pillows are the way to go.  Several new models are much better than the old ones, and you'll avoid hat hair.

If it's not an allergy, try re-adjusting your mask.  You might have it too tight (or too loose).  Ask your DME for an evaluation, if necessary.

If re-adjusting your mask doesn't help, see your DME to find a mask that fits you better.  The contours of the bridge of your nose might cause a problem with the mask you have (that happened to me).  There are so many out on the market now that you shouldn't have to suffer with a mask that isn't right for you.

I use the Ultra Mirage and the Flexifit as back up. I think you may have the straps too tight. It's a case of opposites. The mask is designed to form a 'bubble' when you turn on the cpap machine. This 'bubble' creates the seal.

If you find that your straps are not the problem check the 'ratchet' which controls the forehead pads. There are 3 or 4 settings to allow for a recessed forehead or protruding forehead.

If these don't work you should contact your supplier as there is a possibility that you were incorrectly fitted.

I used that mask for my first two weeks on the machine.  Had the same problem.  I recently starting trying out a nasal pillow type mask.

my dme company representative--respitory therapist--suggested that for irritations on the skin where the mask rubs or sits would be to apply some aloe vera gel w/lidocaine, like you purchase to calm sunburn down.  I have been wearing a mask for about two months now and use it on my nose where my nasal pillows rest.  It is cool and soothing and won't ruin the silicone material of the mask.  Above all, she told me not to use any facial creams, vaseline, or other type of products.  So far so good.  I hope this helps you!!
