Rainout & taking mask off

Post Rainout & taking mask off
Hi,

My humidifier is on setting 2 and I don't want to put it to 1 because the air seems cold.  However, every few nights water ends up in my face and the hose.  I wipe the mask and put it back on but then there is a really annoying whistling sound.  I can't take listening to it so I take the mask of which is bad I know.  I am presuming it is from the water in the hose, right?  Do I just have to live with it until the morning?  When I take the mask off in the morning I feel so hungover and miserable.  Are there solutions?  Oh, I do have a fleece covering on the hose but obviously it isn't helping.  I need to solve this problem so I don't keep taking the mask off.  I am using the C-Flex machine and Respironics Profile Lite Gel Mask (I think that's the name of it).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Wendy

I use the Remstar Plus with C-Flex and humidifier. My setting is 3. I know how annoying rainout can be because I used to get it quite a bit myself. I made a hose cover also, and it didn't help so I finally gave up and ordered the heated CPAP tube and started to use it. That seemed to stop the rainout. Then I began to experience air leaks from my mask. I decided to try the nasal aire. Right now that is working for me, and I find that I can even use my regular CPAP hose and not worry about moisture. Of course, initially my nares were a little tender, but after I started using Ayre nasal gel and stuck with it, the problem passed. I think everything just takes time and patience. Very Happy

Wendy, when a hose cover doesn't solve a rainout problem, the most effective solution is cbrannon's suggestion to replace the cold plastic main air hose  with the Aussie heated hose (heated cpap tube.)

Thanks, I already have a cover for the hose and it doesn't work.  I will have to look into the heated hose.  How does that work?  My guess is they are expensive.  I don't understand how it is heated from being attached from the mask to the humidifier chamber.  Thanks!

Wendy,

I just purchased a "heated CPCP Tube" that RG and cbrannon mentioned.  It works very well for me - no more rainout!.  My cost was $121 but you will also need a power adapter that can be purchased from a local electronics store for about $24.

One other suggestion, if you decide to get one (and the suggestion came from someone else on this forum) is to purchase a remote on/off switch for the power cord that you plug the power adapter into.  This time of year you can find those remotes averywhere as they are used with outside light decorations or for Christmas tree lights.  Without the switch you need to unplug the the power adapter when not in use and plug it back in when you turn in for the night.

Good luck,

George

I purchased the tube from the same company in Australia and my cost was $89.00. I did have to purchase the power supply from Radioshack which cost about $20.00. If was worth the cost to stop the rain out. If you go on the web site make sure you order the model compatible with the CPAP you are using.    Laughing

I bought the heated tube a little over a month ago, and my price was the same as cbrannon's.  Is it possible that some of the earlier price quotes were in Australian dollars?  Like you, I tried the hose cover first, to no avail.  The heated hose was worth every penny.  As I understand it, it works by having a little heated wire (I'm sure there's a technical term for this, but I don't know it) that winds its way up the hose from bottom to top--so the whole length of the hose really is heated.

All that said, because I live in a cold, humid part of the world and keep my bedroom pretty cool (60 degrees F) at night, I still get some condensation in the barrel of my Swift mask, especially when I have the humidifier turned up to 4, but even at 3 occasionally.  But it's worlds better than it was before I got the heated hose, and I definitely sleep better.

Are you sure the rainout is from the hose? or could it be just from your mask? I have rainout now that I am using the nosemask, but there is no moisture whatsoever in the hose. I talked to the RT about it and he said it is from my breath in the mask. I think I'm gonna try sleeping with my head under the blanket to see if that causes any difference since it's warmer under there than in the main bedroom.

Anyone have any ideas on this? I have the annoying whistle sound too, but I discovered it's because there is water in the vent holes. I tap on them and it goes away for a bit... then, last night, I got the "bright" idea of using the sheet to cover the vent holes... it still let air out, but it muffled the whistle...

I've started keeping a dry cloth next to the bed so I can swipe out the mask in the night when I get the moisture in the mask. This is something new for me since I didn't have it before when I was using a full face mask.

HAKU, I saw where the tube is compatible with RESMED CPAPs, but to be sure, why not e-mail them since their e-mail address is posted on the web site.

Help! I can't find the website to order one from.  But I know you can't post it here  Confused  I tried googling.  Did you all get yours from the same website?

Yes, the rainout is still happneing and is annoying and moisture is in the hose so it's not just from the mask.  Thanks for all the help.  I forget I would need an adapter but I should have know that seen as though I am from out of country.

Thanks again.  You guys are soooo helpful!  Very Happy

This happens to me, too, whenever I wear my mask instead of nasal pillows . . . last night was particularly bad.  And yeah, my hose is totally dry.  Good to know that it's not just me!
