Post New here.. kind of bummed
Hi. I have been visiting this site for the past week or so before my sleep test. A lot of awesome information! A quick background of who I am.. I am a 25 y/o female, not overweight, fairly athletic. I have always suffered from being tired all of the time, I wake up tired and unrefreshed, poor memory/concentration, and migraines. Over the past 6 months or so I started waking up from choking or from just plain not breathing. I don't snore but occasionally snort. My husband has noticed me struggling here and there to breath in my sleep.
Last night I had my sleep test and I slept pretty well for the situation. The technician told me that my oxygen levels never dropped, she heard no snoring or any gasping problems, and never needed to put on the CPAP. I know I have to wait for the Dr. to give me the real results but I cant help but be bummed that nothing happend. On top of it Im just as tired today as normal. Just curious to see if anyone has experienced this but still was diagnosed with sleep apnea? Im hoping I have it because it would a big step towards helping my constant tiredness etc.

Hi Mrs. Hub,

Wait until the results are ready to be reviewed.  You can't go by what the tech told you, not entirely.  And just because there was no obvious evidence of snoring or gasping, it doesn't mean there might not be sleep apnea.  Many people don't exhibit obvious symptoms yet have sleep apnea.  And the tech may mean that the oxygen levels didn't drop significantly.  And if it turns out not to be sleep apnea, the polysommography is very detailed and may point to other possible causes.  But when the report becomes available (it usually goes to the referring physician), you might ask for a copy of it, for your own records.   Don't rule out sleep apnea just yet.  It was actually wrong of the technician to describe that much to you.  If there's a clear very severe case of it, techs will tell patients that.  But telling other information is not wise and can be misleading, because you may well have sleep apnea yet not be significantly severe.

Also, just because they didn't test you with cpap is not an indication you don't have sleep apnea.  Most people who are found to have sleep apnea usually come back another night for a repeat sleep study, with cpap.  Only a few have what is called a split night study where they do both parts in one night.  There is certain criteria for doing a split night study and only a few people with sleep apnea fit that criteria.  The person has to have initiated sleep early enough to have enough time for both studies.  And the person has to exhibit a high severity.  But people with mild or moderate level of sleep apnea do have the condition and are seriously affected.  That criteria is just a way of ensuring folks get properly tested.

Wait to see, and let us know what you find out.

Linda

Yup...just wait for the results.

But hey...if you DON'T have Apnea, thats a GOOD thing!  Of course you still have to figure out what makes you so tired, but you can cross that off the list!

FWIW, my first sleep study was six or seven years ago in home.  Came back negative, even though i was snoring like a chainsaw and gasping.

This year I was re-tested in a sleep lab and WHAMMO.  Severe Apnea!
