When my daughter was 8, we had a sleep study done to see if she had sleep apnea. She was constant yawning and never really seemed to get a good night's sleep. It was determined that she had sleep apnea, a mild case they said. The ENT surgeon said that her tonsills were huge, a 3 out of 4, and needed to come out along with her adenoids. So, we did that. For a few years after, it did seem like she was getting a much better night's sleep. No more yawning at all, seemed more rested.
My daughter is now 13 and her quality of sleep is not good again. She is constantly taking long naps and seems to genuinely need the sleep. She takes a couple of medications for anxiety and we don't know if it is the meds that are interrupting her sleep, her anxiety or if maybe her tonsills and adenoids have grown back???
Does anyone have any thoughts? Is it common practice to do a followup sleep study with kiddos who had their tonsills and adenoids out?
For what it's worth, I have severe sleep apnea myself and I know it runs in families. Could it be that she'll have sleep apnea - regardless of whether her tonsills and adenoids have been taken out - because of the family connection?
