Post Possible Sleep Apnea
Hi,

My name is Tracey.  I'm new to this group and have some questions.   Question

I had a sleep study done Sunday, Sept 26 and have not gotten my results yet.  How long does it take to get the results?  I was told by the tech that I have a very fast heart rate when I sleep and had a number of apneas, but she wasn't allowed to tell me anymore.

Can sleep apnea cause shortness of breath during the day?  I've been experiencing SOB (during the day) since June and it seems to come on right after I wake up.  I have an congenital anemia problem and see a hematologist for that condition.  The last time I saw him he gave me Lasix for swelling in my feet and ankles.  After I took the first pill (20mg) the SOB went away.  Does any of this-SOB and/or swollen ankles & feet have any correlation with SA?  Confused

Can SA cause a person to wake up chocking and coughing?  Every so often I wake up in the middle of the night chocking and coughing on saliva.

One last question.  Can SA cause night sweats?  Every night for the past ten years (give or take a yr) I've woken up drenched in sweat.  I  also have hormonal problems due to being on Prednisone for 25 yrs to keep my anemia condition under control and they can cause night sweats.  I'm just hoping the night sweats may go away if I have SA and get treatment for it.   Smile

Take Care and God Bless,
Tracey - Anxiously awaiting results Very Happy

Post New too
I am new to the group too. I think my husband has sleep Apnea too. He has shortness of breath all the time not just in the morning. He becomes winded really easily. He has night sweats all the time, and his ankles and feet swell. I am trying to find funding for the sleep study to have him diagnosed. I hope the CPAP helps you. Good luck

Hi Tracey,

OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) does not cause edema and SOB.  IF a diuretic for your edema helped your SOB, it would suggest that a cardiologist might need to lfigure out why you have edema.  Did you tell your Hematologist that you had SOB?  The load on you heart is greater when you are up and moving around, therefore the SOB upon awakening.

Night sweats also is not a symtom of OSA, but remember, every apneic event is like being suffocated, so I can't really say since you have some other issues.

I'm not sure what you mean by choking.  Like gasping for air or choking on stuff in your throat?  Gasping for air might be apnea, but choking on saliva, etc. wouldn't be.

You should get your results in about a week.  Let us know how you are doing!  If you have OSA, you will feel better once you are treated no matter what else you have going on.

Vicki

My apnea not only caused night sweating, but it continued for about two hours after arising every morning for several years prior to my diagnosis, and treatment. I could not dry my hair or put on makeup until it stopped each morning.  It has not been a problem since starting cpap.  It is my understanding the increased blood flow (volumne) to the head and neck increases body heat and sweating for many of us with severe apnea.   Several of my male relatives had head and neck sweating relieved by cpap treatment.  Not every patient displays every symptom, but this one is common.

Hi Tracey,

The shortness of breath, and edema are quite often indicative of arrhythmia problems with the heart -- also the high heart rate of course.  Apnea can be a cause of arrhythmia.  The relief with a diuretic points to fluid in the chest area putting pressure on the lungs, that in turn can be due to the inefficiency of the heart when in arrhythmia.  It can be hard for your cardiologist to diagnose as sometimes it comes and goes.

You may want to check into Lymphoma.

My MIL had what the doctors originally thought was Congestive Heart Failure.  Her symptoms were tiredness, shortness of breath, and fluid build up.

When the fluid was drained off, X-rays showed a spot on her lungs, which turned out to be Lymphoma.

Not saying you have it, but check it out to be sure.
