Post My Appliance Kills Me!!!!
I have had my oral Appliance for about 4 months and have been back to my dentist on 4 occasions as when i wake up and take it out of my mouth in the morning the pain on my left side is intense. I cant close my mouth completely and it hurts to chew and open my mouth wide.

Has anyone else ever experienced this.

When i have gone back to the dentist she has adjusted the appliance and had it refitted.

I also feel the sensitivity on my front teeth but this goes away shortly after i wake up. I have not been able to wear this appliance for more then 3-4 days a time. Other then the killer pain it has been working great.

You probably advanced the device too quickly.  I don't know what type of device you have - I have the TAP 1.  I only advanced it one turn every 3-5 days, any faster and I would experience excruciating jaw pain like you described.

Thanks for the reply. I actually dont have lower jaw pain but rather upper jaw pain, ill say just at the height of my ear lobe. When i bite my teeth on the left side of my mouth do not touch but my right does. My doctor only adjusted my appliance once and shortened it. I dont know by how much it was shortened and if it can be shortened more.

During my adjustment period I experienced some discomfort but never excruciating pain.  As phoebe368 stated the adjustment period needed to be slowly done.  What type of appliance do you have?  In the beginning I used a device called an Aqualizer help return the jaw to its original position.  I still use the Aqualizer when I drive as the stress from driving makes me want to grit my teeth.  The aqualizer helps deal with the pressure to my teeth.  You may also have TMJ problems.  Find a good neuromuscular dentist to check your TMJ in the area that is sore.  I have the Somnodent device and am very satisfied with the results. I went from a 49.7 AHI to 9.9 AHI.

I ran into the same situations with jaw repositioning. It created headaches and soreness in my jaws when I was eating.

There are solutions that approach it differently and control the tongue to open the airway as opposed to moving the jaw.

I went with the full breath solution by Dr. Keropian. Works great! It was a bit of money out of pocket as the insurance would only cover 40% of it but it has been working.
