So the neuro finally called me back yesterday (he was supposed to call about 10 days ago). He addressed 2 areas of concern:
1) Central sleep apnea: the events he had during the sleep study were all associated with an arousal or happened during REM which the doc said is normal. Most of us have a few centrals a night. One of the four events was associated with an ox desat of 86% but the other ones only dipped 2-3% so the doctor isn't concerned. It was also a very unusual night for him as far as sleeping goes - the room is not ideal for a child Emerson's age (he was only 18 months at the time of this 2nd study).
2) Obstructive hypopneas: The doctor treated these as apnea events which actually makes me kind of glad to see. Again, there were not many of these but because he's already had the T&A, he was concerned that he was still experiencing some trouble. We talked about doing a medicine combo of Rhinacort and Singulair but neither of us really think Emerson would benefit from it. The doc and I both suspect his obstructive issues may still be coming from his tracheamalacia (weak areas of his trachea that collapse in due to his main birth defect). This has gotten better over time and most kids outgrow it between 2 and 4 years old so we're hoping it will continue to improve. He also didn't have any ox desats during these events which was good to know.
So we are just going to re-evaluate in 3 months. In the meantime, Emerson is not displaying any symptoms of apnea like snoring, irritability during the day, etc. He goes to bed without any trouble and sleeps through the night for the most part. He wakes up happy and eager to play most mornings which is a good sign to me compared to the days when he woke up and was cranky for over an hour but refused to go back to sleep. Overall, we got good news and now that his esophagus got dilated, he is eating really well. He's experiencing all kinds of new foods that he couldn't swallow before. Life is good.
