I carpool with two other people on my 25-mile drive to work.  Gas gets more expensive and traffic gets more congested, so the three of us marvel that so few people do it (not too many multi-passenger cars in traffic besides us).

Why aren't you carpooling?

Very cool, I know I'd like to have all that time I spend in traffic back to be with the kids.

But, I'm not letting you off the hook so easily, Dad.  Why doesn't Mom carpool?

To all readers, if your spouse is the only commuter in the house, feel free to respond on his/her behalf.

I voted based on my last job when for years (decades) I commuted long and arduous miles.
Now I live 5 minutes from work (3 if all 3 lights are green).
So now I'm spoiled.

But my vote wasn't entirely right.  My hours were irregular, yes.
But I also hated the idea of depending on others for a ride, or being the driver and depending on others.
I did enjoy using the bus and subway, even though they could be a hassle and take much longer.  But that way I didn't have to rely on others and come and go at my own pace and hours.  It was nice just zoning out on my way to and from work.   But basically, I'm set in my ways, I guess.

Post It does force one to cooperate with other people.
When you drive alone, you do get spoiled by the protective cocoon that is your car.  I'll concede that it's a little hard to give up.  You also have to maintain a relationship with other people, resolve conflicts, etc.  It can be done, though.

Linda, I'm intensely jealous of your "five-minutes-on-a-bad-day" commute.  Ever consider walking or biking in good weather?

Gawwwd.... not with my painful arthritic knees!   Wink   (although I'm sure it would be good for me.... with my poor health, I'd have to work UP to that!)

I do have to drive past the site of a fatal car crash, where mourners placed all sorts of wreaths and a cross next to the road as a memorial.  There's not a day I don't see that, then look suspiciously at other drivers, wondering who was the culprit.

It's been funny moving from a big urban metro area to a rural small town (they call it a city, but I'm not convinced).  When living in the metro suburbs, it was a 20-minute ordeal (counting drive and parking) to go to the grocery store.  And it was nothing to commute two hours out of my day or drive 50 miles to go shopping on a weekend.  Now, living in this small place, I groan when I try to decide if it's worth the "hassle" of driving the 3 miles to the north side of town.  .... Strange world.
