Post severe osa in a 2 year old.
hi
i have read a lot of the posts here but finally decided to introduce myself.

i have a 2 year old daughter who has had apneas and brdy's since birth.
recently she had another oximtetry recording done in hospital.  In the 8 hours she was asleep she had 287 desats>5% and 425 hr rises >8bpm.
the doctors saw her obstruct again and again sometimes with deats sometimes not.

she had her tonsils and adenoids out before xmas, and a very rocky period straight after this but has nowsettled down.

currently she is still having desats and noisy breathing that i still believe are OSA. ( we have a o2 monitor at home)
the noise she is making is differnent from before the T&A it  seems to come from her throat.
my daughter does not do this every night all night. however any tiny thing seems to set her off.
like crying ( as in having a tantrum before bed over teeth cleaning or something) or any sign of virus or sore throat

i am my wits end. i want to be rid of all the oxygen and sats monitors in my house. we do have an option to have a sleep study (proper formal one with total expert in the uk)  but its not that easy. cos my daughter can be ok for a while we have to phone on the nights she is bad to try and get a slot, no success there so far.
the only alternative is a prolonged admission to try to catch one! i have 2 other children and hubby in army away from home so this isn't really feasible

has anyone had any experience of problems post T and A and anyone who has a child with sensitive airway. it seems the smallest thing will narrow my daughters.
any advice welcome.
many thanks

Hi sleeplessmum!  We have a lot in common.  The T&A is a rough surgery to recover from, and actually she could still have some swelling/recovery left to do from that surgery.

My son has had T&A, lingual tonsillectomy (they are tonsils on the underside of your tongue) because his were also enlarged, he had part of his tongue removed, because it was falling back and obstructing his airway.  Once all this was done and he had recuperated from these surgeries, he began making a funny noise, coming from his throat, that was totally different from the noises he was making prior to surgery.  He also started having problems when he was running around the house, crying, laughing, etc.  What we found, through endoscopy, was that he had acquired laryngomalacia due to the increased work of breathing he had suffered over the last several years.  We are currently waiting to schedule surgery to address the laryngomalacia.

My son also gets much worse with illnesses.  The least little virus, runny nose, cough, anything and he can struggle enough that we end up in the hospital.

I don't have any answers.  But know that you are not alone, and there are other kids out there who are still struggling with sleep apnea, even after T&A.  We are definitely in the minority....but we are not alone.
