Post Sleep Apnoea at 21
Hi all,

Over the past few years i have been diagnosed with SVT (Supra-ventricular tachycardia) but also over the past few months i have been having sleepless nights espcially within the first 3 hours of sleeping where i will wake up gasping for breath and steadily move to another position to sleep, this episode seems to happen for quite a while.

Recent i have noticed that when i wake up to this sensation i have a type of palpitation but i also sense a tightness in the chest and a numbness around my whole body, this is new to me, which has occured only in the past 3 days.

To put this in perspective though, i have suffered the cold/flu for the past 2 weeks in which i have lost my voice and i seem to have serious sinus problems... in which i feel at some points i am choking at nights but i have no ides or can make sense why this is causing my heart sensations.

My last sleep apnoea sensationwas the worst in which i woke up to gasp breath and also felt a strange tenseness in my chest of which my whole body went numb.. even under my tongue.. i panicked bu was also looking forward to getting back to sleep. when this was impossible i sturggled to a friend and told him.  the numbness and sensations disappeared after 5 minuted but i had no doubt that this was to do with my mixture of sleep apnoea and my SVT.

I would like any possible help to see if i can cure this without medical help, or if impossible whether i should go forward to a hospital as doctors/GP's inj this area take 2 weeks to get appointments and i am fearing this will be too long. my condition seems to be getting worse by at least one step a week.

Thanks for reading any help given,

Kevin Conlin

Hi Kevin,

You need medical help. Don't mess with snake oil type 'cures'. You may indeed have OSA and there is a possibility of cardiac problems.

Go for an urgent appointment, agree to take a cancellation or whatever is required.

Palpitations and tightness in the chest are not good and should be seen to ASAP.

Daniel

Sleep Apnea aggravates stress, depression, and hypertension. I have had all those symptoms including the numbness through out my body and they were all panic attacks. Waking up gasping for air, you need to stay calm and catch your breath, try to turn your past experience into positive ones by remembering what you did the last time to get through it before the panic attack started and keep in mind, that they were 2 separate incidents. They say that panic attacks can’t hurt you, but it’s very hard to believe when you’re having one.

In the meantime try sleeping on your side, don't use more than 1 pillow if your sleeping on your back. Tell your doctor about the panic attacks (he can help) and be as proactive as possible and a life long commitment (if necessary) to control apnea is better than the alternative.
