Post Anyone here diagnosed thats in the Military?
I have my first appointment at Portsmouth Naval Hospital tomorrow morning.

I have had this for a long time. My mother, my ex-wife, roomates have all told me that I completely stop breathing many many times at night. It never really phases me at all. I wasn't tired at work or anything. Sleeping 5-6 hours a night was plenty.

Well, just in the last 6-8 months I have started to notice that I have been waking up worn out. I wake up many times at night and feel like I just got let up from being underwater for too long. That really scares me to the point I really don't want to sleep.

My mother uses a CPAP machine. My dad needs one Very Happy. Both of my kids had terrible tonsil problems. They both had a terrible time breathing while they were using the bottles. And they both snored so so bad. The oldest ended up having her T and A's removed from getting tonsilitis every 3 months. She doesnt make a sound anymore sleeping. The little one was REAL bad. She would sleep and wake up just like someone had been covering her mouth. Very scary. My wife ended up taking her to the doctor. The doctor told her that her tonsils were very very large and she prolly would see alot of relief if they were removed. She did have a look at my wifes and they were normal.. She looked at me and gasped. I have never seen so much soft tissue in the back of someone throat. She asked me if I snored.. I told her no. HAHAH My wife thought that was funny. Anyways. I talked to Navy Doctor who at the time was in Fort Worth about getting into the sleep study or something to that nature.. He told me it was at least a 6 month wait. I then asked about the surgury. He told me the Navy doesnt do elective surgury.

Amazing is that I goto NAS Oceana's medical see the doctor and get an appointment 4 days later. I was also told that the VA just lowered the disability from 100% to 50% for Sleep Apnea. I didn't realize it was even thought of as a disability. Anyone have any information. And maybe what I have to expect on a day visit like this?

Hi SlimOne and Welcome!

You can either put military in the search field up there on the right, or you can follow this link.  There are several military folks on this forum.

Make a list of all of your symtoms and show it to your doctor.  For some help, see the following link and some symtoms which are listed below the link.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is a horrible disability.  The long-term effects of untreated apnea are increased risk of heart attack and stroke.  Short term, the effects are fatigue, depression, weight gain, headache, concentration problems, car accidents, etc.

Keep us posted on how you are doing!
