Post Newly Diagnosed
Hi Everyone
I have just been diagnosed with sleep apnea. My sleep test provided the following on my back an average of 105 apneas on my side 61 apneas with apneas lasting from 23 - 56 seconds. I was immediately called back in to do a CPAP and I am due to see the doctor on the 25th. I did notice during the CPAP the pressure seemed very high I could actually feel the mask moving away from my face when I breathed out. The next morning I got up and went home and a few hours later began to feel very run down also my brain felt like it was buzzing thats the only way to describe it. I felt run down for 2 days before i felt back to normal I must say I went in to be tested because my wife said I stop breathing at nite and I am forever taking an early evening snooze on the couch. I always get 7-8 hours sleep every nite and I am not exhausted during the day just to let you all know how I normally feel. I was more wondering if anyone had felt as I did shortly after their CPAP I am going to ask the doctor when I see him but came across this great site and thought I would ask all of you thanks in advance for any replies

Hi Smitty...Glad you found us.  I have found this site to be so helpful to me.  I have been on CPAP for about 4 years so it is hard for me to remember those many moons ago  Smile .  I do not recall the feeling you described after the study.  I can tell you that during the CPAP study (aka Titration) that the pressure is adjusted up and down to find the best fit for your apneas.  I would think if that would make you wake enough to feel the mask moving...and if you woke up enough to feel that then you kept waking ...in turn your sleep was less efficient during that night.

Many people say they do not feel tired..think they sleep "just fine".  As you may well know, sleep apnea is not just about the tiredness...boy, was I surprised at all the major health issues asociated with it.  Amazing what repeatedly suffocating in you sleep can do to you.  Makes me think of the times I use to hear someone say "you know, so and so never had any medical problems, hardly had a cold and gone just like that!"

Get your sleep Dr to prescribe a mask by stating "patient's choice" or similar wording.  There are tons of masks on the market that you may like much better than the one used during the study.  Don't want to get something you do not care for and be stuck with it.

Best of luck...hope you stick around this forum and hang out with us......

Hey Smitty,

I was diagnosed roughly 5 weeks ago. During my sleep study I was stopped by the nurse and told that I did not need to finish the test. I stopped breathing 90 times on my back and 102 times on my side. The duration was 45-59 seconds. When I was told this I said to the nurse thats not too bad and she laughed.
I now have a CPAP machine and have only had it for 3 weeks, and have not had one good sleep. Since being on the CPAP I would say that my sleep has drastically fallen apart. I can also say that I can only get through about 2-3 hours with it on and I wake up and have to remove it. This is now affecting my job as I am a sales manager and spend alot of time in meetings dragging my butt.
I have a wife of 15 years and a 7 year old son who have been putting up with my snoring, breathing issues and moods. If there is anything to come out of the CPAP machine it is that they can finally have a good night sleep. I hope that everyone I know that is on a CPAP is correct in telling me to stick it out and that it is a life altering device, because I do not know how long I can keep this up?

Sorry to hear your having such a problem with it I know I'll be put on it and hope not to have your problems with it but fear I will have issues after feeling the way I did after the CPAP test. Thanks for the replies

Bob
