False Negative?

Post False Negative?
I just got a call from my sleep doctor's nurse saying that my sleep study was negative. I am so disappointed because I was really hoping that they would find something (like sleep apnea) that they could fix and I would stop being tired. Ironically, although I can sleep anytime/ anywhere, I had a difficult time sleeping in the lab.

Is it possible that I did not sleep like I usually would and the study gave a false negative? Or, do people with sleep apnea always show it?

If it turns out that I really don't have sleep apnea (even though I have all the symptoms including my husband hearing me stop breathing sometime), any idea what other sleep disorders I should ask my doctor about?

Thanks for your advice!

Post you have to sleep to be tested properly
That is exactly what happened to me the first time I did a sleep study! I hardly slept all night and the "study" showed that I did not have sleep apnea. To make a long story short, I eventually had another study done at another facility and my doctor allowed me to take an Ambien so that I could sleep. That's when it was determined that I have sleep apnea.
I would suggest you talk to your doctor about doing it again and taking a sleeping pill.

Hi Happy Flower,

The definitive way to determine if your sleep study was valid is to ask your doctor.  All stages of sleep are recorded and the length of time in each stage, which includes REM and nonREM sleep.  If they determined you slept enough so that any hyponeas or apneas would show up(cycling through REM at least a couple of times), then keep hounding your sleep doc. to find the cause of your fatigue.
