Mouth breather or not?

Post Mouth breather or not?
I maybe dumb for asking this but how do you know if you are a mouth breather and what does it have to do with the CPAP?  I am presuming that if you are a mouth breather then something like the nasal pillows mask won't work and a full face mask is needed.

How do I know if I am a mouth breather and will I know before I have the mask fitted?  I have no clue whether I sleep breathing through my mouth or my nose.  I think I breathe with my mouth open.  I don't want to end up getting the wrong mask.  Then again I can try taping my mouth shut but I don't like the sound of that.

one would hope that after your sleep studies they would tell you, but this doesnt always seem to happen

with the CPAP and a nose mask its difficult to know what happens in your sleep if you sleep alone, and nobody elsc can observe you, sleeping with a light on and a video camera in use may be helpful

IMO the problem of mouth breathing with CPAPs and a nose mask hasnt been properly addressed by the sleep disorder professionals, maybe everyone should be fitted with a full face mask
in my case with my nose mask, a very dry mouth on waking means I have done some mouth breathing, which of course the CPAP cant cope with, but I dont know how much

I think they should address this more in the sleep studies.  I wonder if there is a way they can tell.  As you can read from my other posts I believe I am a mouth breather and the nasal pillows was a problem last night.  I too wake up with a dry mouth but never really realized that it was because I was breathing though my mouth.  I'll have to have my husband watch me more closely.  Don't you wake up if you mouth breathe?

Thanks for the help!

Wendy

a slightly dry mouth seems normal but a very dry mouth suggests the mouth was open for some of the time
