Post I get my CPAP on Thursday
Hi everyone,

Someone is coming out on Thursday to fit me with a mask.  It turns out my ins. co. doesn't require that I have the titration study done and they will cover everything.  I just need to rent the auto one for a couple of weeks so they can get a reading then it will be switched to a regualar CPAP.  I guess because I never slept during the 1st study and my sleep efficiency was low during the 2nd study my doctor order the auto machine.  It's $100 for a couple of weeks which isn't bad and then everything else is covered from there on.  What did confuse me is when the lady at eh DME said something about no ins. co. will cover an auto machine because they aren't covered and some about the FDA.  I'm a little worried about it working.  Are the auto machines just meant to be used for a short period of time until you can get a pressure reading?  Does this sound like the way to go?

Any tips about masking fitting.  I know I should try as many as I can and should lay down.  I'm can't believe I am actually looking forward to starting using it.  I think it may be a different story once I get it though.  I am just praying it will work.

Hi Wendy,

I was in a similar position as you.  My titration study was awful, barely slept at all.  My doc also prescribed the auto adjusting machine.  My insurance company is renting it.  I think my rental period goes until December.  The DME just came the other day to "swap" out my machine for another just like it so that they can download the data stored and hopefully determine what my constant CPAP pressure should be.  The way the DME talked it sounds like once a pressure has been determined, they'll give me a standard CPAP machine.....unless I can convince them to just use reset my Auto Spirit to a CPAP.  Most autos can function as a straight CPAP.   Be sure to get a heated humidifier with whatever unit you get.  Makes the air so much more comfortable.  Also be sure to ask the DME what your pressure range will be on the auto.

As far as mask fittings, be sure to have a pillow with you and lay on it in various positions with the mask on.  Most masks may feel like they fit quite well while you're sitting up, but once you lay in various positions you'll know better.  Personally I opted for the Mirage Swift nasal pillows.  I havent had too much trouble with them although I would love to be able to try the Comfort Curve.  That'll have to wait until my rental is over because they claim my insurance wont cover another mask until then.

Good luck with your appointment !  Keep us posted.
