Post One negative sleep test doesn't rule out OSA
Found this link when I was researching the Miljeteig and Hoffstein research. Opened my eyes a bit and had to reread it to be sure I had read it correctly. Anyway:

http://www.chestjournal.org/cgi/content/abstract/103/3/756?ijkey=4372ff74f754059c51fdd78cd6c6483915c8291b&keytype2=tf_ipsecsha

Anyone else come across this study and have something more to add? How many have been turned away from tx by negative studies, or been told they don't need therapy because the figures didn't show the severity needed to convince insurance companies?

John

Post False negative sleep study
I hadn't read the article, but I know it's true because it happened to me.  I had my first sleep study in April '06.  They noted Restless Leg Syndrome and a few apneas, but nothing to be concerned about.  The dr prescribed Requip for the RLS.  I tried that but it didn't help.  Six weeks latter I saw another doctor who took a brief look at my medical history and the first sleep study results and said, "I don't care what the first test results said, I'm 99% certain you have sleep apnea and we'll keep testing until we find it."

Sure enough, in July '06 I had the second study and the diagnosis was severe SA, with both OSA and CSA events.  My AHI was 54.  Part of the problem was that I'm a side sleeper and even though I asked about this before the first study, they told me it didn't matter how I slept.  The second doctor said that it does make a difference and that I should try to sleep on my back during the study.  It was hard, but I slept on my back the whole time and she was right - they found it.
