Can we talk about bed wetting?

Post Can we talk about bed wetting?
Ok, background on us: Hannah is eight years old and has sleep apnea. She has been on CPAP for about three and a half weeks. She is not consistant with it yet but getting there. Some nights she sleeps all night with it and some nights after a few hours she freaks out and has had it. Dr says it will take some time and this is ok. She has been wetting her bed off and on for  while now. I know this is directly related to the sleep apnea(more urine production) and did I mention that Hannah has Down syndrome? For her it means that she has low muscle tone and it is harder for her to recognize that she has a full bladder(she has been potty trained for some time thought) This is becoming frustrating for her and me both. I don't scold her, she is her own worst critic and feels awful. Pull ups are too small for her and our insurance will only pay for diapers-which at age eight is not an option we want to pursue. I guess I am wondering if in time this will dissapate as her therapy continues. Does anyone have any experience with this????

Hi Heather,

I wonder if some of the adult things like Poise pads would work?  They are different enough to not be diapers and they would let her keep her own clothes on.  I hope this goes away as she grows, that would be hard for a child to deal with.

My son wet his bed till he was 10. From the time he was 5 he used a nasal spray that helped. It was DDAVP (don't remember what it stands for). It worked well, but when we tried to wean him off it he would start bedwetting again. When he was 10 they decided he was old enough to have a surgery to enlarge the opening that the urine comes out of. After the surgery he never wet his bed again. The nasal spray was used nightly for 5 years with no ill effects at all, and the best part was that he could use it at home and then go to sleep overs or camping. No one knew of his problem but us.

Ok, was able to find goodnights that are like pull ups in larger sizes. Of corse they have a larger price tag too but that is beside the point. Hannah was a little freaked out about putting on a "pull up" but when I explained it all to her that she would not wet her bed she was willing to try it. I may check out the poise pads too, that may work as well. The nasal spray sounds interesting, will have to look into that. We see the sleep DR again tomorrow so will be asking him about it too.

We had to see a urologist to get the DDAVP nasal spray. I see that it also comes in a pill form now.
