Post Newbie to SA therapies
Hi everyone,
DH is a terrible snorer....actually he is quite good at it.....We are about to make the appt with the sleep institute and I am seeing the CPAP in our near future.  We have been married for almost 2 years (he is 37, I am 35) and his snoring has caused me to spend most nights for the past couple of months in the other bedroom.  We cannot go to bed at the same time because he is snoring in less than 5 minutes and every little noise he makes is like fingernails down the chalkboard.   I find myself trying to go to sleep but the anxiety of the inevitable snoring makes me unable to fall asleep.   I am not worried about the white noise that is made by the machine, but I am wondering about the other effects of having DH's face strapped to a machine every night.

Technically we are still newlyweds and I am wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom.  I am feeling a little funny putting this right out there to a forum I have never been on before, but if anyone understands where I am coming from, I am thinking it is you.
Thanks for listening.

Hi okinmaine,

And welcome!

I'm sure other spouses in your situation will comment.  I'm not a spouse, and I have sleep apnea and use cpap.

But I strongly suspect that if you are currently sleeping in different rooms and the white noise of the machine doesn't bother you, I bet you will be happy once he starts using the cpap and begins to feel the positive effects of it.  Be patient though, it could take time.  But look at the bright side, when he stops snoring, you'll be able to actually sleep together.  And while it may be awkward going, it is still far better than the alternative of you sleeping elsewhere.  And I suspect your relationship will improve once you both adjust to his cpap.  Remember, it's the person who matters, both you and your husband.  What I wouldn't give to have a loving husband next to me, even if he's hooked up to a goofy looking mask.

Good luck!

Linda

Just a "quick reply"... my husband and I are also fairly recently married (three years next month) and fairly young (29) and I just wanted to let you know that he's been working on an essay he wants to post here called "Why I Love My Wife's CPAP."

Not sure what other effects you're referring to, but you might feel better knowing that it takes only a few seconds to turn off the machine and remove the mask. Wink

Welcome!
My husband has been using a  CPAP since February. It is a period of adjustment for both of you. and the unknown is scary.  The white noise is nothing compared to the snoring.
I am married for 12 1/2 years and it took me time to get use to no snoring. I personally did not hve isssues with the noise of the snoring and never had to sleep in another room.
I personally had issues with my husbands CPAP when it first entered our house. It took me a while to get passed it and now it is fine and does not bother me.
Even thought is takes 2 seconds to take it off, Somethings will change in the bedroom .
Sometimes the peson with SA is unaware it affects us and that we have issues and feelings, they think it is only about about them and in many ways it is but it does effect us differently.
Just remember you are not alone and spouses and those with SA are here to help you .
Have a good day.
