Deviated Septum Surgery Experiences
Author Message

Post migraines
Hello all,

I am wondering if any of you have migraines and if you have gotten any relief from the surgery pertaining to this?

I am a migraine sufferer who has a deviated septum.  Looking into getting it corrected for possible relief.

Any comments?

My sense of smell has been enhanced
I always thought I had a good sense of smell but it is way different
For example I was in the nursery buying flowers and I had to figure out
where all the new smells were coming from?? I am always around plants so this was a
 very different sensation for me
I am still getting used to my nose being different and being able to breathe threw my nose
I hope all goes well with your surgury , just remember to follow all post op instructions
and my word to you is to be careful about drinking to cold or fizzy drink(like gingerale) the day after surgury

For me Yes and No.  Yes I have Migraines.  No-ish (for me) on relief; I had a migraine about 10 days after my surgery but too soon to tell.  My triggers are probably different than yours (weather, stress, bad sleep), but if your sinuses is causing/contributing to your migraines then it might help.  At any rate it should help you breath better and or lower your cpap pressure.

Is there anyone else with migraines to help answer?

Frodo

Hi Everyone,

I have had significant improvement with my headaches.  Like I said in a previous post, I always thought my headaches were either caused by looking at a computer screen all day or my wisdom teeth.  Once I had the surgery, my headaches were gone (except for the ones caused my family and friends drama of course!).  But the daily migraine in the middle of my forehead (at the bridge of my nose) which was causing vision issues, is now gone.  That was not a guarantee by my doctor but that has been the best part of the surgery!

Post SURGERY FOR DEVIATED SEPTUM
I just had the surgery yesterday in the afternoon.  I had an excellent nights sleep and awoke with more energy than I have had for a couple of years.  Very little bleeding and except for the irrigation being a little uncomfortable very little pain.  Took one pain pill last night but that was primarily for my artheritus as I am prohibited from taking Aspirin which I usually take about 2 a day for the arthritus. Based on my limited exerience I recommend the surgery.  Should have had it years ago.  Of course time will tell if the current feeling is permanent and those little things do not grow back but for now all is well.  By the way I am 69 years old.

Post SURGERY FOR DEVIATED SEPTUM
The surgery definitely helped me and was worth it.  Along with the surgery for deviated septum, I needed to have my turbinates zapped so to speak and had to have them zapped again  a year later (op office procedure).  The surgery etc has made a huge difference.  I say go for it.

Post Chronic sinuses and blocked nose
I have suffered from chronic blocked nose since childhoood and in my mid twenties was hooked on Otrivin. The very thought of not having the Otrivin nose drops would casue both nostrils to get blocked making me breathe through my mouth.

In 1980 I went in for an operation to have the deviated septum corrected. The anaesthetist goofed and I almost died in the theatre. I was told I had a smalll jaw that made intubation impossible.

In 1982 I chose to get it done by another surgeon. He had three aneasthetist on call just to be safe yet had all sorts of problems.

The surgery did not help in the least. Not only was it painful and led to an infection, every day I look at my faace  in the mirror and curse the surgeon 9 who is now dead and gone 0 for Butchering my nose. He removed excess cartilege and now this causes the right nostril  to collapse and offer a lot of resistance to breathing

I still have a crooked nose meaning a deviated septum and am not contemplating a nose job like Michael Jackson nor am I contemplating a Complete Make Over Rolling Eyes

Dear Sheri
If the septum is deviated generaly one nostril will be blocked while the other allows you to breathe freely. If you have severe sleep apnea to be using BPAP and also have a blocked nose, this is a double whammy, suggesting that you may need the surgery.

The pain is not all that bad. After surgery they will stuff a mile of gauze up the nostrils and you have to make sure you do not get infections.

I must admit I was able to breathe feely for a couple of years without using Otrivin Nasal drops. but then it went back and got blocked all over again. The same with laser surgery for Uvulo plasty that was extremely painful. Again for about two years i could not even mimic a snore. Now my snoring  sound like a 500cc Harley Davidson.

One suggestions is that you get a second and third medical opinion if at all possible.

Post Four days out
Okay, so I'm four days out from a septoplasty and rhinoplasty to correst trauma from a baseball accident 10 years ago. I went in yesterday to get the packing removed, which made a world of difference! The doctor suctioned out my nose and I couldn't believe it, but I could breathe! However, today I feel all stuffy again and am not able to breathe out of one side of my nose. Is this common and just due to the swelling? The doctor said everything went great, I guess I'm just nervous. How long before you found you were able to breathe?

BRulis,
Give it atleast a fortnight to heal. There will be inflamation of sinuses due to the surgery and when this goes down i am sure you will realise that you are breathing without feeling any resistance. Please make sure that you avoid infections of the nose. I took the packin from the nose too soon as it was uncomfortable and paid the price with an infection

For us in the U.S.A., a fortnight is two weeks!
