Post Tonsil and Adenoidectomy Question
My daugher has had sleep apnea since the day she was born.  She is 6 now.  She has/had OSA.  She had her tonsils and adenoids removed April 3rd.  Since then her nose looks bloody inside...sometimes wet, and a lot of scabbing.  I have called the ENT who says this is normal, but I'm not satisfied LOL  I have looked on some websites about the procedure she had and can not find this as a common post op problem at all.  Have any of you experienced this with your children? If so, how long before the scabbing and bleeding went away?

Thanks Bunches!!!

We had a similar post op experience...except my son had some tissue inside his nose cauterized as well...to shrink it.

It's ok to have the symptoms you mention...the adenoids are positioned closer to the nose than the throat...

we had T&A done at age 3....and then a second adenoid removal/nasal cautery at age 7 because his adenoids grew back and were blocking 80% of his airway.  That really helped his sinus symptoms....BUT he still had sleep apnea a year after this surgery.

Our next step is c-pap....so good luck with your daughter's recovery...and remember to give it a full 2 weeks for the scabs to heal...her surgery was only 4 days ago!!!!  My son had relapses during that initial 2 week period too...so give her time....and plenty of it...he was still dog  tired 4 weeks out....and it is the 6 weeks that will give her a complete recovery!

just make sure you don't allow time to lapse in between her pain med dosages...because then it takes longer for her to get relief.  We needed the codeine for a little less than a week...and then switched to tylenol.  remember also...not to give her advil or ibuprofen, as these meds can make her bleed more.  when she blows her nose...do it very gently....or just wipe it gently...normal blowing can cause the scabs to re-open and bleed!

hope this helps....remember...she just had anesthesia too...and that can take a week to totally work its way out of her system...depending on her metabolism. encourage her to drink plenty of fluids...and get plenty of sleep.  sleep is when her body is healing itself.

It's gonna take time...so take it at her pace for the month.
This too shall pass....

Thanks for your quick reply and help :)  Fortunatley tonight I checked her nose, and it looks great inside.  The scabs (which were huge) are gone.  I don't know where they went but they are gone so I am very happy.  All the blood is also gone now. Today will be day 6, so now I have to keep an eye on her tonsils (where they used to be) for a few more days, then hopefully I will quit stressing out LOL

Thank you so very much again for your reply, you put me at ease :)
