Post SLEEP APNEA IN A BABY
MY GRANDDAUGHTER WAS BORN AT 29 WEEKS WEIGHTING 1LB11OZS. SHE HAS CONTINUALLY IMPROVED AND NOW WEIGHTS 6LBZ 1OZ. HOWEVER ON 9/15/05 SHE QUITE BREATHING AND WAS ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL. THESE HAPPENED 36 HOURS AFTER SHE HAD A NUCLEAR SCAN FOR THE KIDNEYS. SHE WOKE UP WITH RED SPOTS ON HER UPPER TORSO AND QUITE BREATHING.   SHE HAS HAD ALL KINDS OF TESTS RUN, MRI  OF THE BRAIN, CAT SCAN OF THE ENTIRE BODY,  SHE HAS HAD THREE BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS SINCE SHE WAS BORN, EKG'S BLOOD WORK AND COMPLETE BLOOD PROFILE. NONE OF THE TESTS RESULTS HAVE PROVED POSITIVE FOR ANYTHING. THE ONLY THING THE DOCTORS HAVE FOUND IS THAT SHE HAS A HIGH PALATE. YESTERDAY SHE ADMITTED AGAIN TO THE HOSPITAL CCU FOR SLEEP APNEA. HER BLOOD PRESSURE IS LOW AS WELL AS HER HEART RATE. CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE TO GO FROM HERE? WHAT KIND OF TEST MIGHT THEY RUN TO SEE WHY SHE KEEPS HAVING THESE EPISODES. SHE CAN HOME WITH A HEART MONITOR AND OXYGEN MONITOR COMBINATION. I THANK ANYONE OUT THERE WITH ANY SUGGESTIONS.

Post OSA in Neonates?
Hi DHenry:
Sleep apnea can occur at any age, including neonates.  If you were to test for sleep apnea now, be sure the lab you go to has experience with neonates.
That said, what you describe could be anything from anaphylaxis to central apnea to obstructive apnea or a few other fairly serious entities.  Your situation at this time is quite beyond the scope of this forum right now, but check back when you can and let us know how you're making out.  Good luck.
