Hi.  I am new here.  I have sleep apnea and have received first surgery for correcting deviated septum to be able to use CPAP machine and have trouble catching on and tolerating the machine for a full night of sleep.  Would really like to make it work as I do not want the additional corrective surgery (to throat, etc).  Will try to figure out my main complaints and post them another time.

My wife also thinks that I should stop drinking alcohol 100pct due to s.apnea .  I usually just drink beer.  This has me a bit PO'd.  I don't want to die from this, but I don't want to stop living either !

I will lurk and learn and hopefully contribute positively from time to time.  I waste time on other message boards.  This seems like it might be constructive.

Welcome slapnea!

Yes, please feel free to post any questions or descriptions or concerns you'd like.  And tell us more about your cpap treatment, like how long you've been using it, what type of mask, if you feel any relief at all, anything that might help us help you.

As to alcohol, I have no idea how badly it affects your apnea.  I'm sure it's always good to cut back on anything, but just see how things go normally or just cut back a little, my opinion.  It may be that no matter what you cut back on, you still have apnea.  The important thing is if you can get relief from your symptoms using your cpap.  Concentrate on getting that to work for you.  Then any other positive changes are pure gravy.  It's hard enough dealing with this new lifestyle, and any other big efforts to change things might make it all seem overwhelming.  Take it easy, and let us know how things go.

hey slapnea,

same here, as a beer lover!  i find it very difficult to quit drinking, probably more difficult than using the CPAC!

Just guessing, but I think what would really matter is how close to bedtime the last beer (or any alcohol) was consumed as to whether it would exacerbate your apnea problems that night.
