Sinus trouble/Sleep Apena symptoms since I quit smoking!
Hi,
My name is Paul, and this is my first post here. I quit smoking almost a year ago. Since then I've had cronic sinusitus and now have just about every sleep apnea symptom. Now I've always had some problems w/my sinuses and I've always been told I was a loud snorer. However, it seems much worse since I quit smoking. I feel tired alot, I've put on weight, and I'm dealing with some depression. I attributed all this to me quitting smoking, but I'm begining to wonder if some of it's not due to my sleep apnea.
I've been seeing a ENT about my sinuses but I made an appointment specfically to get on the path to get tested for sleep apnea. I hope this is the begining of a better life. This site has a lot of great info, and I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you as I go through this process.

Wow, not one response. I'm a little suprised, and dissappointed. Thought this was a "support" forum. Guess I need to find another board.

Hi Paul and welcome to the club. Don't take it personally that no one replied. This is a very busy site and lots of posts. But people are very friendly and helpful here.
Congratulations on kicking the habit. I quit two years in March and my health seems to have gone down hill from there. I just can't believe it is true but I did start getting sick within six months of kicking the habit and now have severe SA, COPD, depression, high blood pressure, morbid obesity, and have had several sinus infections. COPD is because I was a smoker for 29 years. If I hadn't quit when I did I would probably have developed emphysema.
I have been on CPAP for just over a month. I hope you get your test soon and begin the road to better health.

Welcome Paul,
and Congratulations to you (and to Jean in Montana) on quitting smoking. I takes strength and perseverance to quit. Sorry to hear that your chronic sinusitis and other symptoms have developed. That could just be a coincidence - it might be worse if you were still smoking.
I recently was diagnosed and started treatment with CPAP and a feeling better.
I was wondering when you wrote that you "made an appointment specfically to get on the path to get tested for sleep apnea". Are you seeing a Certified Sleep Specialist? Most sleep docs are pulmonologists or neurologists who have a specialty in sleep medicine.
Best Regards
Mary

Stick with the sleep test appointment. It may be one of the best things you've ever done.
And congratulations on quitting smoking. I know that's tough.
Cpap has been great for me... no more fatigue.

i had a similar problem. I quit smoking almost 4 years ago and it was the most difficult thing that I have ever done. Before that I was very healthy and never sick. Since I quit I get sick all of the time - strep throat, ear infections, sinus infection, chronic sinusitis etc. After visiting a ton of doctors and getting treated for depression and ADD (both with no succuss) I have now been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. I have just started using my machine a couple of months ago but continue to have the same fatique issues that I have had in the past.
I too have had weight gain which most people experience when they quit smoking. I am now convinced that all of these problems that I am having are weight related so - I have not idea how - but I am going to take off the extra pounds and see what happens.
I have told my story to quite a few doctors about how I was perfectly healthy when I was smoking but they always look at me like I am an idiot.
Good luck!

Wow, you sound like me in a nut shell. I'm convinced most of my health problems are due to my weight gain also. I need a new goal to try to achieve. I decided I'm goint to try to do a beggining triathalon this summer. I've always thought it would be really cool and I love to bike. However, I'm a good 60 lbs overweight. I'm still pretty active however. I do go to gym at least twice a week, and play tennis once a week. Here is the tri race I'm gonna train for. I have only 6 months left so now I feel a bit of urgency.
I've told the same thing to my ENT that before I quit smoking I didn't have many health problems. I'm sure it's just coniencidence and we would be ALOT worse off if we were still smoking. I need to do someting to get me out of this rut. I'm lost most my friends, and am even as close w/my kids. Something has got to change!

Well, I guess we have a fat club going on here. I'm 5ft.-11½in. and weigh 285 lbs. I probably need to lose around 85 lbs. I've been working on it since the first of the year. It's tough.

I think that we may be getting a little bit off subject now but I have to agree that I have basically fallen apart since quiting smoking. I never had any problems before. I do think we will all be much better off for quiting - in the long run anyway. For me it has been almost 4 years and I have still not been able to pull myself back together. I recently read that quiting smoking is at least as dificult as quiting heroin. I also read that cigarettes actually change the chemical balance in your brain which continues regardless of whether or not you continue to smoke. It is a very powerful drug and may take a long time to recover from the effects. Why did I ever start!

I had problems w/sinus infections for awhile after I quit too. I think the body goes through alot of changes, most for the better of course. I've put on too much weight after I quit. I was already over weight. This is the number one problem with my sleep apnea. Hang in there with your quit. It's the best thing that I've ever done. Congrats and keep up the great work.

I quit smoking 10 months ago, and still don't feel normal
I've been smoking for 25 years then quit 10 months ago. I started when I was very very young. I finally done it and yahoo... I don't even crave them anymore.
But i'm totally not right. I'm always catching some sort of bug. Tho i eat less and exercize more, i can't shift the 5 pounds i've gained from a lower metabolism.
I can't go no 2 without help in tablets. My personality has changed a bit. I don't think i'm as much fun anymore. i have much less energy.
And having a few drinks sucks! It's no where near as fun. It's just a downer now and puts me to sleep.
I would rather be smoking. But I have to give it a full year!!

Hi!
i just read you posts, and I would like to throw in my 2 cents: I quit smoking 9 months ago -- gained 2-3 pounds, but never over 136 which is quite ok for my height -- still -- i had about 7-8 sinus and ear infections and now bronchitis. I've never had so many sinus infections in my entire life! what is wrong with this picture?
I thought I'll healthier after I quit!!
