"whistling" mask

Post "whistling" mask
Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forum and look forward to learning from you all.
I started with my cpap machine the beginning of July. Unfortunately while starting with and adjusting to the mask I was also caring for my mother who lost her fight with cancer on July 21. My grandmother also lost her fight just 3 months earlier on April 12. I'm thinking these losses have alot to do with the fact that I don't feel the cpap is working for me. My doctor feels they may contribute to but are not entirely to blame. So, here I am 3 months into using my cpap and not feeling any better. My doctor increased my "flow" 2 weeks ago and so far still feeling the same... and now to boot my mask has started "whistling" which wakes me constantly throughout the night... (also wakes husband who has apnea and is waiting for his cpap). I have the patience for letting the cpap "kick in", my doctor is working with me with this problem. My question is about the "whistling" mask.... does anyone else experience this? are there any ideas what may be causing it? The whistling is not coming from where the mask seals on my face, it seems to be coming from the vent.

Gee...you have had a lot to deal with lately. It sure would be hard to work on cpap with two recent deaths in your family. But do keep trying, and you will get there someday. It took me about two months to get used to wearing a mask at night, and to finally start getting better sleep. What kind of mask are you using? Knowing that will help people who have the same kind of mask to try to help you with the whistling problem. Hang in there Robin...

Yes, It would be good to know what mask you are wearing.  It is likely the "whisltle" you describe could be coming from the exhaust.  If a little bead of moisture collects on the exhaust it can whistle, next time you hear it, try just touching the "holes" with your fingertip, and see if you feel moisture, and/or if the whistling stops.  If so, you may need to work at reducing the condensation in your mask.

Also a bad connection or crack in the connecting peices can whistle.

It would be a good idea to contact your equipment provider.  We had a batch of "whistling" exhalation valves on some full face masks.  Simple solution.  Replaced the "o-ring" in the exhalation valve and the whistling stopped.  Good luck!

Hi!!

Sorry about everything you are going through, seems like everything happens at once.  If you are using a ResMed FF mask, they are having trouble with the anti-aphyxiation value whistling in the elbow and are replacing the mask at no cost.  If that is the case, call ResMed customer service.

If you are using a different mask, then sometimes connections aren't quite right and the mask will whistle.  If you take it apart, wash it, dry and then carefully put it back together, it will sometimes eliminate the whistling.

Hi Robin,

Could be the exhaust vents on the mask. Any small blockage can cause them to whistle.
Failing that it might be a small hole in the hose from machine to mask. Sometimes these holes are not big enough to see. You need to turn on your machine, cover the mask and run your hand over the hose to 'feel' for any leaks. They whistle also.
