Post Sunflower seeds
I was falling asleep at work all the time (I am waiting for my bipap machine which I will be getting today) and was on the fast track of getting fired. My wife eats sunflower seeds at home and I have never been a big fan. Anyway, I was at one of my daughter's soccer games and my wife was eating her seeds, I was sleepy and looked over and said "Hey, can I some of those" because I was hungry. Well, I started to eat them and all of a sudden I was awake. So, I bought a bag of David sunflower seeds and took them to work. Now when I am falling asleep, I pop a mouth full seeds and I wake up. If I stop eating the seeds, I start to fall asleep again. As I am typing this I am chewing on seeds. I just wanted to know if anyone else has discovered this little trick and if it has help them also?

Hi Darth,

No doubt sunflower seeds are good for you and yummy, but you have discovered the subconscious trick most apnea suffers learn the hard way.  You eat in attempts to increase your metabolism and it might work for a little bit, but before you know it, you are going to be 20, then 40 pounds overweight.  Cut back on the sunflower seeds and hit the CPAP instead.

Hi Vicki,

I just picked up my BiPAP machine today. Tonight will be my first time on it. The seeds just got me through until I could get on the BiPAP. Thanks for the warning on the weight gain.

I was about ready to run out and buy some sunflower seeds, no joke!

I had thought offhand that it might be that it is the crunching that keeps you awake, given that I gather an early sign of apnea is falling asleep when you are doing nothing. (I had just thought I was bored with the TV).  Ah well --- another "cure" gone!

ALL HAIL THE BiPAP MACHINE!!!!!

I can't believe how awake I am today. I have never been this awake. I use the full face mask and it works really good. My only problem is that my setting is so high (23/18) that by morning my mouth is totally dry. I couldn't spit to save my life. Now it is 5 hours later and my mouth is just now starting to feel normal. Anyone have any ideas for helping this? Breathing through my nose isn't a real possibility.
