Oh FogHorn, you are a hoot! Welcome!
You'll have to call or email ResMed's customer service and ask about the CPAP placement that they recommend,. But honestly, it probably doesn't matter much unless you use a humidifier so that any water which condenses in the hose goes back into the humidifier rather than your mask.
How soon you feel better is individual. You will be fine going into surgery as healthy as you can be and using your CPAP will ensure that. Before your surgery however, find out their policy regarding your CPAP use and make sure your anesthesiologist knows you have OSA. Ask if you can bring your own CPAP for after surgery use. If they let you do that, it will probably need to be cleared through the hospital's instrumentation department first. I can't emphasize how important it is to work out your CPAP use with the hospital. I just finished a five day stint on a telemetry floor last week after surgery 'cause they wouldn't let me use my own CPAP or mask. Their mask leaked, defeating the purpose, screwing my O2 and BP all to heck and setting off the stupid alarm with every leaking breath I took. Policy change is my middle name now.
It is great you are feeling it, you were pretty sick!
