Post I'm only 25, could I have Sleep Apnea?
I'm hoping some knowledgeable folks can help me with this. I understand that this condition is usually found in middle aged adults.

I just recently heard about Sleep Apnea and have been reading up on it.  Here are my symptoms:

-gasping and brief periods of no breathing during sleep (i've woken myself up before)
-loud snoring when on my back (so my girlfriend says)
-perspiring during sleep
-i'm about 50 lbs overweight
-I fall asleep very quickly in bed
-occasionally have dozed off in an evening class while sitting for long periods, but never at work
-sometimes feel tired at work, but not constantly

I've never done a sleep study, but I'm wondering if I should.  Or, should I just try sleeping on my side?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!  Smile

Mike

I have been dealing with similar symptoms over the past few years.  Just in the past year have things gotten worse, so I had a sleep study done.  I have very severe sleep apnea.  I am only 31, so yes you could have it.  And judging by what you said you probably do, I would suggest a sleep study.  Don't wait until things get worse, believe me, it makes your life miserable.

Mike,
It can't hurt to have a sleep study.  Your symptoms sound a lot like apnea to me, so you should at least talk about it with your doctor.  Any age person can have sleep apnea, even children, so don't think that your age excludes you.  Some apnea can be helped by changing your sleeping position, but personally, my theory is that I like moving around at night and there is just no way I can guarantee that I won't slip into the position that aggravates the apnea.  I just don't trust myself that much.  Laughing   Good luck with getting your condition sorted out.

Heck yes you could have it.
I am 30, not overweight, had little to no daytime sleepyness, and  still have severe OSA.  I think I have had it all of my adult life.  I don't fit the stereotype of a person with OSA, so it went on a long time before getting diagnosed.

I would explore it further if I were you.

Take the snore score test (in links to left of forum index), that will also help point you in the right direction.

I'm 27 and have snored HORRIBLY since I was a child.  These last two weeks I've had a sleep study done and have been on a c-pap.  From what I've read it doesn't really seem to be age specific.

Hey I am also 25 with severe sleep apnea. I have most likely had it since I was a teenager and I just got diagnosed this summer.Talk to your doctor about getting a sleep test done. Just knowing what causes so many of my problems is a huge relief! Good luck and keep us posted on how you are doing  Smile

Cool Hi eveyone, I AM NEW TO THIS FORUM AND AM LOOKING FOR SOME SUPPORT. I AM 34 AND HAD A MILD HEART ATTACK A FEW WEEKS AGO. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT MY HEART IS OK!  HOWEVER, THEY BELIEVE THAT I HAVE SLEEP APNEA. IT SEEMS THAT I NEVER GET ENOUGH SLEEP AND AM ALWAYS TIRED. MY WIFE HAS TO KICK ME SOMETIMES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT TO GET ME TO START BREATHING AGAIN. I AM GOING INTO THE HOSPITAL TO DO SOME TESTS. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT TO EXPECT? ALSO, IF DIAGNOSED CORRECTLY, WHAT TYPE OF MEDICATION OR DEVICES HELP.  ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Definitely possible. I'm 20 years old and have mild apnea, so it's not like it's unheard of.
