The quick and simple answer is that you have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) Martha. Your doctor will prescribe a Constant Postivie Airway Pressure Device (CPAP) for you to use when you sleep (including naps). A CPAP is just a glorified air flow generator. By having a continuous pathway of air from your CPAP to your lungs, an airway "stent" is formed which will keep your airway open. CPAPs are small and getting smaller, you can do everything you want to with them, travel, etc.
It is great that you will soon be treated as untreated apnea is strongly and positively correlated with increased risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as short term memory loss, fatigue, weight gain, car accidents, etc. You will be feeling much better soon. Feel free to ask lots of questions, of us and your sleep doctor, who should be a Diplomate of the ABSM (see links section for info.)
