My doctor wants me to have the study.  Insurance does not cover all the costs.  I am wondering if I should use the money to buy the machine instead of the study?  Do you get more from the study besides yea or nea?

Well, you really need the Yes or No before you even bother with the machine.  You might have some other sleep disturbance completely.  Trust me, the sleep study gives you much more information than a simple yes or no.  Sleepydave is the guy to ask about what a sleep study will tell you, though.

The simple answer is yes there is more to a sleep study than yay or nay.  If you have severe O2 desats, just getting the machine might not take care of it and you might need supplemental oxygen.  Or, you could have restless leg, or periodic limb  movement.  Now on the flip side, Dr. Barbara Phillips advocates getting people on CPAP without waiting for sleep studies to at least get them treatment.  Ultimately it is your health and your decision, but I suggest getting at least one full sleep study to determine what course of treatment is necessary.  (Split night would be the least expensive as the first part of the night you are evaluated, and the second part, if you have sleep apnea is used to determine pressure and o2 if necessary.)

The most important step is getting it treated, don't skip that one!
