I moan and it wakes me up! Please help.
Sometimes, right when I close my eyes and begin to fall asleep, I will wake up because I am making a loud moaning noise. It's very loud and people have told me I moan in my sleep sometimes throughout the night. Would this be any way related to sleep apnea? I read that most people the moan don't tend to wake up and it happens during REM sleep. I experience the moaning right as I fall asleep...maybe 3 to 10 mins after starting to daze off. Any info would be great.

Do you have any type of chronic pain condition?? Are you currently depressed about some event in your life??

This might help, it deals with groaning instead of moaning but maybe it will help.

Here is an uneducated answer. I am not a specialist but just someone who does a similar thing. I believe it is part of parasomnia group of sleep disorders. Sometimes when I first start to fall off to sleep I make little moaning sounds. Sometimes I can hear myself moaning and wake up and ask my husband if I was ust moaning. I do not believe it is related to OSA. Parasomnias are a whole group of different sleep disorders...like sleep talking, night terrors and sleep walking. All are group under the one heading.

I don't suffer from depression or chronic pain. Just this morning when I woke up, I was lying in a recliner and started to drift off back to sleep. My friend on the sofa next to me woke me up saying that I was weezing and moaning/groaning. This has been going on for about 2 or 3 years now on about a weekly basis.

I did a little reading about catathrenia and it says that it takes place during REM sleep. I can't find anything though about it waking you up right when you begin to fall asleep. I've also been told a few times that it looks like I take deep breathes and hold them in for around 10 seconds or so before I exhale. As if I am holding my breathe. This has never bothered me. The moaning begins right as I fall asleep and startles me and wakes me up.
I'll make a brief list of things that I have experienced:
-hearing myself moan right upon falling asleep and waking up from the sound (happens almost weekly)
-I've been told that I also laugh and moan when I'm in a deep sleep (more than several times)
-I've been told that I weeze or look like I take deep breathes and hold them in for long periods.
-I've been told that I keep very calm facial expressions and don't move at all when it happens.
-I've woken up in the morning and would sit a few minutes, and if I would start to drift off to sleep again, I will moan and wake myself up not even 1 minute after I closed my eyes.
(this has been happening more frequent)
-Sometimes, I can actually feel the slow breathing begin as I fall asleep and the change will startle me and I'll jump up.
Oh, and not sure if this is related or not...this doesn't happen very ofter but sometimes whenever I begin to fall asleep, my whole body will jerk and wake me up. Doesn't happen too ofter but it scares the !@#! out of me
thanks

I think I missed something..are you on CPAP for OSA?
Since I have been on CPAP I sleep like a baby without bad dreams, moaning or snoring. Life is good.

No. I have never seen any specialist's and haven't been diagnosed. I don't snore at all.
