Can a sleep study be inconclusive?

Post Can a sleep study be inconclusive?
I did a sleep study at the Hennepin Medical center in Minneapolis,MN. I was told this was one of the top clinics. After I got wired up I had a had a hard time sleeping. I was told I did sleep but I have no recollection of sleeping. They also said they got enough data and said I had a AHI of 22.3. My doctor told me I was a light case and was borderline for the need of a CPAP machine although I ended up getting one. My question is...Because I slept so poorly is there a chance my apnea is worse then tested? or should I trust that they got enough data?

Yes. There are a few instances where sleep studies can be inconclusive, however these instances appear to be "rare". I will say that your AHI of 22.3 is far from being mild. It is actually in the moderate category and should certainly be treated.

I was very surprised he said it was mild as my wife has a hard time sleeping with me as I am either waking her up snoring or she feels like she has to nudge me to get me to breathe.

In all honesty, the severity really doesnt matter, so long as you meet the criteria for insurance reimbursement, which you appear to do. The followup study (the Titration) is much more imporant. You may want to inquire about a sleep aide (OTC or other) in case you do have difficulty getting to sleep.  Just a thought.

You should get a copy of your sleep study report (about 7 pages or so). It will report on how long you slept, the various sleep stages, SaO2 levels etc etc etc. You are entitled to this report.

You should also get your sleep doctor to explain it to you. It is important that you know exactly what is wrong and how it can be treated.......it helps immensely when dealing with treatment.

Daniel.

Daniel knows whereof he is speaking. That is excellent advice. GET THAT COPY! Hopefully, your doctor will be compliant and discuss it w/you and answer any questions.

I have the report. Is there anything I can find on the internet that explains the results? Unfortunately I have a high deductible plan and can't afford to see the specialist. I was unable to use the machine because of sickness for awhile but recently have been using it and the last couple of days I checked the efficiency data on my Resmed Autoset II and it was a AHI of 1.8 which I'm assuming is good. What is the titration study?

After you go through it (against your report), post any othe questions you may have.............best to do it in the sleep studies section.

If you have questions, please post as much relative data from your report.

Best of luck.

Daniel.
