I like this forum the best of any that I visit. The other 2 forums that I visit may or may not be commercially motivated. I won’t mention names, but I think that you may know of them. I am basing this on the fact that they have “.com” in their web address.

The chat room here is just that, a chat room. We can get together and chat about whatever is on our minds, within reason of course. True, there are many mask, machine and sleep issues discussed in this chat room, but there is also an amount of non-mask, non- machine, and non-sleep issues discussed there, as well.

I have no idea of who administers this forum, but my hat is off to them. In others words, please don’t change anything.

Its good to hear that people like it.  Helping those with sleep apnea *is* the reason that this board is here.

As to the other forums, I am not aware of any other non-profit forum.

There are actually 3 other forums that I know of and one of them I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot mouse cord. The other 2 are great sources for information, much more so than is here and by a factor of 7.5 times (ie. sleep apnea forum here (largest of the forums here) has 7611 posts total as of this post versus 56708 posts on the snoring and sleep apnea board of another forum and 59842 posts on the other forum). That doesn't indicate that this forum is bad, just not as well travelled I guess. Yes the other two forums I talk about are online businesses but run the boards independent of the store business. However, they have good picture presentations of the typical equipment people are offered by DME's and allow cross posting of these pictures. Here you can't do that which in my opinion is very restrictive and non beneficial to the people of this board. People need to see what is available out there and like they say a picture is worth a 1000 words. The more information made available to a person the better the choices and treatment they will get and make for themselves. There are a lot of people who, like me, visit and post to at least one other forum other than this one. I say more power to them. I will post a direct link to the message forums (not the stores) of the other 2 boards I visit but the board monitors may delete the links. If they do so and you would like a link to them you can PM me and I will forward the link to you. I'm not at all suggesting that you dump this forum as it has a life of it's own and a great bunch of people but like I said above, the more information available to you the better the choices you will make. I am in no way associated with either business, I just post to their boards as I do here.

DVL,

Actually, this site is at the top of the hit list according to Google stats.  The reason it has fewer posts is because it has only been around since last summer.  Posters need to carefully read the commercial links sticky in the Sleep Apnea Help section.  Nowhere does it say you cannot post pictures of equipment or talk about equipment.  You can even link to a manufacturer, you just can't link to a storefront.  We talk about makes and models all of the time.  And, if there is a technical reason why you cannot post a picture, PM Mike or Linda, they are the web-site management gurus.

We only need 7611 posts cause we am succinct!!  (I love that word, but I hardly ever get to use it appropriately.)

("Robust" is good too, but it usually doesn't come out right.)

I agree, there are some brilliant posts on the other boards.  I really enjoy posts by mikesus, lduyer, okie-girl....

...and some other guy, I forget.

Actually we have quite a few more than 7k posts... But that is irrelevent.

DVL - If you go to the Help section, you will see a post about linking to storefronts.  This is not a limitation by our chosing, but rather by the IRS.  (The ASAA is a non-profit)  As said before, this does not limit you from discussing equipment at all, or posting links to equipment or pictures of equipment, as long as its not on a storefront site.  (if you have a picture you want posted but can't find it anywhere other than on a storefront, pm me and we will see what we can do.)

If you have suggestions, please feel free to pm myself or Sleepapnea_Ed.

I am new to this forum and am very glad to have found it. My better half is the one that suffers with apnea but I come on here looking for answers to questions we have. Hopefully he will soon be getting restful sleeps that will allow for more time to fish.  :)

Mike,

I am the original poster. I figured that you were non-profit from the url. I will go to the other sites to see what is going on, and read the posts and reply occassionally.  Personally, I am tired of everything being commercial.

As stated, I particularly like the "chat room".

One last thing, could you include a "spell checker" on your site? I sometimes try to use words that are larger than I can spell  Wink

Keep up the good work  Applause

These comments are interesting.

And DVL, yes there are other great boards.  I do not disagree with that.  If it hadn't been for the two you mentioned, I don't know how I would have been able to handle my adjustment to this world of cpap, which was all new to me.

And yes, our size is due to the fact that we are new, having started late June.  And I don't see anything wrong with discussing products, comparing notes on what works and doesn't work for people.  We just can't link to the people who sell them.  Nor can we allow visitors to be made uncomfortable by people soliciting their products.  But shopping for these products is easy, the products are only a google or a froogle away.

It's all a matter of choice, and preference.  As a volunteer working with the ASAA to create this thing, my motivation was to help offer an alternative to commercial-based boards and to try and provide information that might not be offered at those sites.  It doesn't mean the others aren't good.  I think it's amazing that they've been able to reach so many people and be of such great help.  It's about apneics helping fellow apneics.  Like any other major medical nonprofit group (like for diabetes, cancer, the heart), the ASAA's website gets a lot of online visitors.  It just seemed right that it should also offer a discussion board and chatroom.  I figure the more boards out there getting the word out the better.  It's all about getting people diagnosed and a means of support.  Thanks, everyone for the nice comments.

Thank Linda.  She prodded me into getting it working.  Took a while to tweak it to work correctly, but it seems to be behaving.

Glad you like it!

Gee, thank you Mike.  But it's only because you are a good listener.  And a good tweaker!
