Apnea Rumor

Post Apnea Rumor
I have an inquiry to determine if some recent information I came across could be true or just rumor.

A friend told me about sleep apnea related to drug use.  Extended abuse of narcotics inserted through the nasal cavity brought about apnea.  Is this true?  Can nasal drug use contribute or cause sleep apnea?

Thanks for any feedback!

Nightrider,

I am not an authority, but I don't think that is right.  I have never used any of those type of drugs.  Before my cpap, I had never even put anything in my nose.  But of course it is just an opinion.

Apnea is caused by collapse of throat tissue.  Snorting trashes the nose, so the two would not be related.  Anything that generally causes greater relaxation of muscular tissue will exacerbate apnea, including narcotics, because the muscle tone of the throat is further relaxed increasing the severity of apnea.
