Headaches with CPAP?

Postby Dawn » Sat Jul 23, 2005 3:46 pm

Hi, I'm a newbie here :-D

I was put on CPAP about 3 months ago and from the first day have had a horrid headache every morning EVERY time I've used it. My PCP took me off it for 2 weeks and the headaches went away. He put me back on and the heachaches came back. He referred me to a pulmonologist who has decided my allergies were worse than I thought and that I was why the CPAP wasn't working correctly. I am now on 3 allergy medications and have a new CPAP machine. I have a chin strap, the new Comfort Curve nose mask thing, and the headaches are still here. Ironically, the month in between doctor's visits when I was off the CPAP was the least tired I've been in the last year. The last week has probably been the worst in the last year.

Has anyone else had headaches like this? I do have an appointment with a surgeon in a few months, but I'm reading that that may not be my best option either.

Humidifier

Do you use a heated humidifier? That makes a HUGE difference. If you do have a heated humidifier then, you may want to find a good allergy specialist. I have used allergy medications for years, but since I've started on allergy shots I feel much better.

Yes, I do use a heated humidifier. I also just started on allergy shots last week. How long did it take before you felt better? Are you saying there's hope then? :-D

how long

I have been on allergy shots for 6 months and feel progressively better each time. My DME told me to put 4-5 drops of Vick's Vaposteam in the humidifier chamber with the water and that helps with congestion. It might help with headaches as well.

Thanks - maybe I'll try that as well. I haven't noticed and congestion and didn't think my allergies were bad (I've always been on a daily allergy medicine, but felt that was enough). However, when I saw the pulmonologist last week, he said my congestion was bad and put me on 2 more allergy meds and the shots. I "failed" all but 2 of the skin tests they did. It was funny, because I never in a million years would have expected that.

Another question, how long before you felt a difference in how tired you were after you started on the CPAP? After reading the boards I'm thinking maybe I'm not giving this enough of a chance. The headaches are horrid, but I'll admit that so far today I only have a mild one so far, so maybe there's hope.

Thank you for your replies!!!
