Post newbie needs advice
Hi everyone, this is my first post on here and i really need some help from you oldtimers!
I,ve never been diagnosed as having sleep apnea as my doctor says that because i dont snore then i dont have it. I dont think that this is true as i have all the other symptoms. I am begining to dread going to bed every night, or even napping through the day because as soon as i start to nod off my heart starts to pound, i wake up suddenly as if i,ve stopped breathing, i feel dizzy, and cant lie at peace for more than about 30 seconds. The racing heart and having to sit up to catch my breath leaves me so scared, i litterally think that i,m going to wake up dead if you know what i mean!! I end up getting up every night just to avoid the feeling. My doctor gave me propanolol which helps sometimes, but is adamant that the lack of snoring means no sleep apnea, so nothing is being done to help me. I would be so greatfull for any advice.

There isnt a lot of advice to give in my opinion. Find a new doctor or insist that your current doctor order a sleep study. Dont take no for an answer. While snoring is often question in a preliminary screening, it is NOT the only factor.

Id call today, if I were you.

I don't think you  absolutely have to snore to have sleep apnea but apparently you do to have some Doctors take action. Go to another Doctor for a second opinion, preferably someone familiar with Sleep Apnea. Good Luck to You!

Thanks to you both!! I will go back to a different doctor tomorrow. I just needed to know that i wasnt being a hypondriac! We all assume that doctors know everything, but obviously they dont. I,m cutting down on tea and coffee, but does anyone have any ideas on what i can do in the meantime to help until i can convince my doctor to get a move on. sorry to be an old moaner but i,m just so glad that you people realise where i,m coming from.
 Surprised

In the meantime, id suggest that you ONLY sleep on your side. Stack pillows up behind you to keep you from rolling over on your back.

Its your health. Some physicians seem to lose focus on that. I wonder what kind of world we would live in if all physicans treated us like their own family. Ha. Fat chance of that even happening.

There are probably a lot of other tips that users on this board will tell you.

Good Luck!

goodnight girl if you have a problem that bothers you enough that you are not comfortable even to sleep, then you need to have it checked out, and if a Doctor "blows you off" then you definitely should see someone who won't! After all your paying for their services one way or the other! Insurance or other wise. RAM_Sleep has a good suggestion on sleeping on you side, if that isn't comfortable, do you have a recliner? Heck I can't lay flat and my last sleep study was done in a recliner! It wasn't as comfortable as my adjustable bed, but it worked just fine! Just a thought, Glad your getting a second opinion! Good Luck to you!

Goodnight girl, do you have anyone that can observe your sleep to determine if you stop breathing during the night?  That's one symptom a doctor can't ignore if someone observes you with apneas.
