Hopefully an easy question from a relative new CPAP user
I have been on CPAP for about three weeks, and I LOVE the sleep I have been getting. That being said, the last two or three days I have been waking up with what feels like heartburn or something close to it. I've never had heartburn, so I am kind of guessing. It does tend to go away after a few hours, but I just wanted to know if it's something I should be concerned with. I was told that nausea and possible vomiting could happen, and is a huge contra-indication for CPAP. Being 3 weeks in, I would think I'm over the rough spots of basic adjustment. Again, any feedback would be greatly appreciated. If this helps any, I have the ResMed S8 and heated humidifier as well as an oxygen concentrator, and use the ResMed Activa mask.

heartburn can be controlled with indigestion meds, also should help to not eat for say 2 hours before bed and no midnight refrigerator raids :-x
it can be a side effect of some meds such as NSAIDs, or be caused by anxiety

I agree with lynn543 but also talk to your doctor it could be something more seriuos to.
If this is a re-occuring problem, best advice is to talk with your doctor. Only he can determine with specialized tests what is causing the problem (yeah I know, they don't know everything, but they can sure rule things out)...

Quite likely you are experiencing some "aerophagia" (swallowing air). It isn't uncommon during CPAP therapy. Often it only occurs intermittently.
You could also be experiencing some night time reflux which "could" be caused by a somewhat weakened LES (lower esophageal sphincter).
It "could" be "silent" reflux that you've been unaware of until a little bit of "aerophagia" w/CPAP.
If it continues its time to discuss the matter w/both your sleep doctor and your family doctor. It may be that a visit to a gastroenterologist for evaluation would be in order.

My experience with CPAP over the last year has been that my acid reflux, which I formerly had every night, has gone away. I've read where many people have seen acid reflux go away, strange that the opposite is true for you. I also had some of the bloating initially but it has not recurred at all since the first couple of months.
