welcome
the headgear shouldnt need to be very tight, make the final adjustments in bed lying down, also most elastic stretches when new, it may help to pull on it to stretch a bit
your mask may be the wrong size, was your face measured? or it may not suit you
does it have a resizing procedure, some do

 Tight headgear
It is not a mask and does have some velcro areas, but it was fitted by the company that brought the CPAP to my house. Can i safely make it looser?

ChronicFatigue what is the name of your headgear or mask is it the Hybrid or the Liberity? Does it cover the mouth and have a piece that goes kind of over the chin and have ribbed nasal pieces or does it have just the part that covers the mouth and has more straight nasal pieces? Anyway it does sound like the straps are to tight! They shouldn't be so tight that the part covering your mouth hurts you, or makes marks on your face. Try loosing the bottom straps up just a little. You can always pull them back tight if the it starts leaking air around your mouth. You want the straps tight enough to keep the air from leaking out but not so tight that it is uncomfortable for you. If that doesn't do it enough try the top straps that connect to the mask. You just have to keep doing it till it feels comfortable and doesn't leak, it might take a little bit to get it just right. good Luck to You and Keep posting an let us know if it works and how you are doing!

 Tight headgear
Thanks for the response. My headgear is resperonics optilife. It does not cover my mouth, only have nasal pillows. I think my ears are too high for this headgear. I put it on looser last night and over the top of my ears. It worked a lot better and left only light marks. Also my sinus is hurting a little. Is this normal? My rate is 9.

Go here http://optilife.respironics.com/fitting.aspx and watch the fitting videos. I use the optilife and it doesn't need to be that tight. If the pillow is pushing on your teeth, you have it adjusted incorrectly. The pillow should be swiveled further back so it doesn't push against your face under your nose.

 Tight headgear
Thank you for the link. My headgear was put together wrong. The adjustable strap was on the back of my head, not on top. No wonder I was having so much trouble. Wow, what would I do without this group. soft hugs

Chronicfatigue, welcome, I also use the nasal pillows, and have recently adjusted to the same dilemma. I adjusted the straps to comfort, on the top strap and a little tighter on the back strap, took a few nights of playing with to find the right fit, But I also found I was pulling it off during the night...So I got some good info. here and used 2 small pieces of tape, to keep me from pulling or pushing it off during the night, and so far it is working.

 Tight headgear
Thanks for the response. My headgear was up side down. After fixing this, I had my first good night. No sore ears, etc. Wow, this is more complicated than I thought it would be. I have had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for 12 years. I wonder now if it was Sleep Apnea.
