Post Got a Copy of Brandan's sleep study. Could you please help
Hi all,

Just called the Dr's office and asked for a copy.. as easy as that.. didn't think they would give it to me.
Ok here is the study findings.

Total sleep time 498 mins.
Apnoea/Hyopneoa index 5
REM sleep 18%
Slow wave sleep %31
Arousal Index 6
Periodic Limb movement index 18
Oxygen down to 85%
Co2 rose progressively during his sleep...

Can someone help me understand what this means. This study was 2 years ago.
I am wodnering if they will make him have another sleep test now.
His weight is very low at the moment ( 14.8kg) and he has lost weight since the last weigh in about 6 weeks ago.. he has 15.2kg... He is 5 years old....
I always tell him his head and feet grew but the middle part forgot to!!! at least he has laugh at it... lol

Please help me these dr's think you are stupid and won;t undetstand what they mean so they don;t bother explaining it.

Thanks so much
Mel

Mel,

You need to demand a second sleep study. You can't treat a child off a 2 year old sleep study. No reasonably intelligent doc would. I would also address the weight issue with your pediatrician. I know that slow weight gain is a sign of apnea, but your son shouldn't be losing that much weight because of apnea.

The results you posted mean that there WAS apnea that clearly should have been addressed then, but that doesn't mean that's his issue now...

Tiffany,
Thanks yes i thought i should ask for another sleep test..seems things have declined alot since the last one. Do you think the weight issue is due to the per limb movements?. It seems he gets a work out with both... i tell people he has run a marathon in his sleep.

My Ped thinks the weight issue is the sleep apnea and once that is sorted out he will start to gain weight again...
Also i think that will the lack of eating we have made such an issue trying to make him eat that there is now a "mental" hurdle that we have to over come with him too.... one step at a time.. sort of the sleeping and then the rest should follow is what they are saying. I hope so cause boy do i get some looks when we are at the beach in summer.... i am surpised that someone has not called the welfare dept on me...

thanks for your reply.
Mel

The report indicates that his apnea was pretty mild, the restless leg movements are the most significant as well as the rising CO2.  It is actually the CO2 that I would want more info about, if I were you.  Has the dr said anything about?  If not, question him about what this indicates.

I dont particularly agree with this. Its borderline mild / moderate from the limited data that I see. Just my opinion though.

In children, OSA can be diagnosed with an AHI greater than 1 with oxygen saturations at 89%.

What was your childs AHI in REM Sleep? Was he lying in the supine position while in REM?

Finally, what was your childs baseline SpO2? 97, 98%?

It could also have been central sleep apnea, which also tends to be worse in the supine position.

I think that we can throw ideas and opinions around, but they still won't help her in the present situation. You need a good doc that will listen to you, run a new sleep study, and then  actually follow-through with some treatment. In my son's case, there isn't treatment and we just pray each night that he wakes up each morning.

I do wish you the best of luck and we'll be praying for you and wisdom on the part of the doctors and patience for you all....

Well maybe, but opinions and forums will allow her to generate questions to ask.
