Apnea while not quite asleep?

Post Apnea while not quite asleep?
Hi all,

Another newbie here - just had my sleep study on Thursday. I have not been given any results. Although I know that it was a split study, and
I did not meet the protocol of 20 events per hour to start CPAP that evening.
The technician told me that that doesn't mean that I don't have it, but he did not confirm either way. It was a bad night, and I actually asked him if
I slept at all. Although I was exhausted, I didn't feel like I slept at ALL the whole night. Turns out that I did, and they just did a full night of diagnostics.

While I'm playing the waiting game (like a lot of others Smile ... I have a question. Is it possible to have an apneic event while not quite asleep? I took a trip for
work in September. While on the flight, I experienced what felt like gasping for breath. Ok, maybe it was more like a snort Smile The weird thing was that I felt like
I was awake. I had my eyes closed, but I was aware of the noises around me. Could it be that I was still awake, but my throat muscles were relaxed enough to
block my airway?

Thanks to all for a great forum!

I used to do the snorting thing all the time right before I would fall asleep.  My wife used swear I was snoring, I'd tell her I couldn't be, I wasn't asleep.  As usual..........she was right.

jenny.... i too have a similar situation.... feel short breathed on a plane, and dizziness when i get off.

i'm wondering if the cabin pressure on the plane is relaxing us into apnea.

my last few flights have been uncomfortable at best.

thanks for bringing this up.

anyone know something about this?

the cabin pressure is equivilant to being at an 8,000' ft elevation, so the air is thinner and could make it feel worse than if you were home.

Hi Jenny,
I had an MSLT done recently (multiple sleep latency test) and for it, had to take 4 naps.  I thought I had slept only 1 of the 4 times but had a strange sensation of energy leaving and returning (thoughts becoming more intense and "muted").  This is the best way for me to describe it and it's still not right.  But, at anyrate, I apparently did fall asleep all 4 times.  I believe that it was stage 1 sleep therefore, we're still aware of things but the brain is "shutting down".  I was shocked to find I fell asleep everytime.   Maybe you were in Stage 1 when you made your "noise" Smile  Hope this helps.

I HAVE FOUND MYSELF ON MORE THAN 1 OCCASION WHEN I'VE BEEN "WIDE AWAKE" AND ALL OF A SUDDEN HEAR MYSELF SNORTING....I THOUGHT I WAS ALONE...I'M SO GLAD(NOT REALLY) THAT I'M NOT ALONE. GOSH I'VE LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT OSA SINCE NOVEMBER. WE ARE A POPULATION RAPIDLY GROWING. ONE OF THE MDS I KNOW SAYS OSA IS THE "DISEASE OF THE DECADE"

My husband has sleep apnea and i have witnessed him doing the snort. He said that he would hear it too. I could always tell when he was about to fall asleep he would start to breath funny, and I would tell him you are going to fall asleep. Of course he waould deny, but would fall asleep. This could also happen when he was talking to people. I have read online that this is called a microsleep.

I have experienced this very often. I am usually on my back,or sitting up. It seems to happen just as I am falling asleep.

Jenny,

I've been diagnosed and treated for six years.  Over time, I have learned what my throat feels like when it is beginning to collapse if I fall asleep without my CPAP.  Not that I can wake up and stop it, it is just that I can tell what is happening.  I think a snore usually wakes me out of these "micro-sleeps"  Embarassed

Post Yep, I'm a snorter too
I have totally experienced this very same thing.  I asked my sleep doctor about it and he said it happens when your throat relaxes, even when you're awake, like a mini-apnea or something.  Very embarassing - especially when it happened at the dentist while getting my teeth worked on! Shocked
