I'm a newbie here.  This is a great site with so much useful information.

I don't know if this topic has already been covered, but I just wanted to know about traveling with your CPAP, especially with all the new air travel regulations.

I just wanted to throw out a question for all of you:  

If you could rent a CPAP  - that is, when you check in to your hotel or cruise ship, there will be a CPAP + tubing + distilled water waiting for you in your room - Would you be interested in using this type of service?

That way, you would not have to carry it around - It will already be there waiting for you at your destination.

I don't think I'd do it, I'd prefer to use my own.  By the way, I might have found a place for you guys who need cpaps to get one. I was talking to Amtrak yesterday, we were thinking about taking a train trip, and since it would involve overnight in a coach car, I asked about using my cpap on the train. She said "you mean those breathing machines?, I'm sure you can , we get people who leave them on the train all of the time." I would need to use a battery pack that would be good for a at least 5-6 hours, so we will drive. I wonder if Amtrak auctions off their lost and found stuff? I guess they can't because of medical regulations , but I sure hope they don't throw those things away.  Virginia

Katze...Ya tryin' to start a new business?   No, I would not use rental stuff like that.  Don't know where it has been and how it has been cared for.  My life relies on knowing my stuff...and keeping it in good order.  If it was a wheelchair etc then that would be OK unless I needed special seating comfort....but not something that keeps me breathing through the night.

Part of the reason for carrying a CPAP when traveling is so that you have it with you, not so that it is waiting at your destination.  Travel plans can unexpectedly change; you would want your CPAP with you during an unexpected layover in Phoenix, not waiting for you in Las Vegas.  

If somebody did want to use a service such as you describe, there are far too many chances for something to go wrong.  

A far more useful service would be emergency equipment and supply delivery.  If somebody comes into a strange town on a Friday night and finds that they forget their mask or their hose is torn.  It would be a very good thing to know that they can call a toll free number and that the service would make arrangements with a local DME to deliver the needed equipment to the hotel within hours or the next day at the latest.

Now, not having to carry spare parts *just in case* or worrying about something happening to the machine (such as little grand nephews playing quietly too long out of sight..if you know what I mean)...would be a blessing...Good One Bearded One!

No, I would not use one because then I would have to figure out how to operate one that might be a different brand.  Also, don't want to use humidifier, hose, or mask  if I don't know if someone with AIDs or other has used it.

No, I would not rent one if I had the opportunity. More importantly, travelling with a CPAP machine is really not a big deal. I have travelled with mine all over in the past year and have had absolutely no issues.
