Bed Sheets - notice a difference?
I've had my BiPap machine nearly 4 months now. Thanks to a mildly claustrophobic nature compliance has been difficult for me. But in the last 10 days or so I've compiled enough data to show that I'm definitely a better sleeper on some very nice sheets my in-laws got us last Xmas. I was wondering if anyone had some experiences along these lines they might share.
More detail: My mother-in-law bought us a nice set of high threadcount sheets from Home Goods(owned by Marshalls') last Xmas. Based on some shopping I did there last week I believe the brand was Hotel Collection, with a count of 440. Not sure as packaging was discarded. I keep a detailed spreadsheet on my nightly compliance, and just over a week ago I could say with some statistical confidence that these sheets were worth something more than an extra hour of machine compliance per night. I say "something more" because it seems clear that the beneficial effects accumulate over time. And with the still small sample size there are still other factors getting in the way of isolating the effect of the 440 sheets.
If the 440's are helping, should 600's help even more?
Until a couple of nights ago, I hadn't been using the 440 pillowcase. We've got a king-sized mattress(deep pockets too), but no king-sized pillows. As a result my wife gave the pillowcases back to her mom. I got one back on Tuesday, and have used it the last three nights. Too early to tell if it has additional effect.

As long as they are all-cotton and they haven't been "softened", I don't think that I sleep any differntly on good sheets than I do on cheaper sheets. I hate sleeping on cotton-poly blend sheets or sheets that have been rinsed with fabric softener or dried with dryer sheets.

I suppose I should start looking at sheet composition. Never thought of that. I do really like the feel of the nice sheets, but its tough to tell if the comfort is responsible. I never felt particularly uncomfortable with the other sheets.
I have noticed the last 3 nights with the 440 pillowcase that my nose has been a bit more stuffed than usual on my 2nd nighttime go-round. On the first night I couldn't get any decent time at all with the 2nd try. Night before last I gave myself a shot of Afrin, and of course did well. Last night I did a bit under 90 minutes, and not terribly well. I'm wondering if the 440 pillowcase is the issue, but 3 nights is not a lot of data.
I've been pretty congested all my life, and suspect I have a deviated septum. Neti pot helps a bit, but not much. You'd be surprised how little flow I get out of that. But I'm concentrating on the sheets right now.
Since the sheets definitely make a difference, the thread count issue seems important to me. I do wonder if I can "turn the dial to 11" by going for the really high thread counts.

I cannot imagine any scientific data showing sheets make sleep apnea any better. My opinion is that nice sheets, "yes I have the Hotel Collection" feel really good and therefore, the effects are psychological. I feel the same as Bearded one "don't think that I sleep any differntly on good sheets than I do on cheaper sheets." My final comment is that if your choose to purchase 600 thread count HAVE AT IT! ENJOY!!!

I am Princess and the Pea!!!! I have to have GOOD sheets. BTW, Home Goods is owned by TJMAXX...Anyway. Thread count....more is not always better, it depends on the ply and weaving. Some very high thread count can be rough. I have a set of very high thread count that are pilly and itchy. Read below...I found fantastic sheets at SAM's Club....I think BJ's carrys them too.
I use to shop HomeGoods for my sheets...and have always bought them there until I happened down the isle that has sheets & towels at Sam's Club of all places!!!!! I have to open the package to feel the sheet. They have about 3 different ones... The one I get is a white set...they feel crisp to the touch, 100% cotton, high thread count. These sheets are now the ony ones I use...take off weekly, into washer/dryer, back on. I have bleached them over and over again and they are still strong after 2 1/2 years of daily use. The have that crisp, fall day feel to them...almost snap when you shake to spread over bed. They are silky to the touch. I have a set in the guest room too and every single person who has slept in there has commented on how nice they feel. Does anyone remember the white "camp" shirts? That nice crisp cotton feel?
I truely believe that a well made bed makes a huge difference. I have a really hard time sleeping on anything less than these...I even took the queen guest room ones to my sleep study!!!!!!! I may not have much in life...but I will not go without a good mattress (Tempurpedic) and good bedding. If you shop right you can find good bedding at a great price.....I think the king set at SAM's was $99...could have been $69...I will look on my next trip there!

I agree, I can't sleep on sheets from Wal-Mart, they all seem to be 180 thread count, totally cheap junk like sleeping on burlap sacks or something. We shop at a place called Linens-N-Things, they're on the web, they have a great sheet set called Carlton Square that's 380 Threat Count, I just went and looked that info up and found out these sheets are on sale now for $29.99 ... geez ... we paid $49.99 for them. Sometimes sheets take a break in period to get comfortable, these didn't, they were wonderful from day one. No I can't feel a pea under my mattress, but you should at least be comfortable, especially those of us who have enough trouble sleeping in life as it is.

Does anyone know of research linking sheet type/threadcount to congestion? As much as I like sleeping on nice sheets, I don't really know that simple comfort is the reason my compliance goes up. One of the primary determinants of nightly compliance for me is my level of congestion, and I suspect the sheets may be affecting that in some fashion.

Wouldn't any sheets out of the dryer be mite-free? But yeah, its explanations along this line I suspect.

I am not sure that new sheets are dust free; well used, frequently washed sheets would probably have less dust and lint.
Washing sheets in hot water kills dust mites, chlorine bleach will also kill them. Thoroughly washing sheets will remove dust mites and their feces. A hot clothes dryer will also kill dust mites and will help remove dust, lint, and dust mites.

Sleeping better = sleep hygeine. Allergies= breathing better. Feeling good about yourself and your surroundings...Plus...good tips on where one can find good sheets at a low price.
BTW...when I shop HomeGoods...I look on the clearance rack. I find mismatched sheets, buy the fitted and flat seperately then interchange/pair up with my white sheets.
