Post Frustrated, Mirage Quattro
I have been using the mirage quattro for 3 weeks now, with an APAP. I'm so frustrated i'm ready to throw the entire machine across the room. I put on the mask, think I have a good seal, and then in the middle of the night when I wake up the pressure is high, and I am battling leaks. Mostly under the eyes, blowing into my eyes. Some leaks around the sides of the mask, that make a farting noise.  I then reset the machine, to "settling" I fall back asleep, but then "if" I wake up again, I'm battling the high pressure, and that is when the leaks start. I almost have to have the straps so tight it hurts my face. I took it back to the RT who adjusted the mask, and of course, no problem while I was there with leaks when it was on high pressure. I really don't know what to do with it, I was told I am past res med's period of allowing you to try new mask, and the mask has already went through my insurance. I can't affford to buy a new one, so I guess I have to suffer for 3 months until insurance will allow me a new mask? How frustrating. Do I give up on it?  Any advice would be helpful. This is so new to me.

I use the same mask. I had the same problem. I was using a medium because the measurements said thats the one I should have. I switch to a large and that seemed to fix the problem. I have not logged a lot of time on it do to other reasons but that could be the answer. Going one size bigger may help. See if they would switch it out for you or at least try it out.

I haven't tried that mask, but have you considered talking to your doctor about decreasing the pressure range on your APAP? I think it is recommended that your ideal pressure should be  +2 and -2 of your ideal titrated pressure. Some people with APAP have their pressure set from 4-20 and if the mask leaks, the pressure will spike.

I'm having the same problem w/ leaks, especially around my eyes and mouth.  If I tighten it so that nothing leaks I have a bruise on the side of my face...I'm calling the 800 # on my machine today and see if I can get a technician to come out w/ another mask. When they show you how to wear them and try them on, at least my experience has been that you are not lying down w/ the air flowing!
I have had some great nights using the mask...but it is always a long process to get it on at night "just right." Sad

ditto to all of the above
in the past 2 weeks i've had a few perfect nights with it - but it's seeming to be getting worse
i'm wondering if the condensation that builds up overnight is effecting the seal.
i've also gotten a blister from where condensation has been trapped and the rubbing + moisture has caused a blister

i'm on an auto machine and when it starts it's leaking and farting the pressure is around 20

Post Same mask
I have the same mask and my leak average is 0.00 to 0.02L for the week.  I put it on in the position I am going to sleep in.  If I put it on while my chin is tucked down ie: sitting on the edge of the bed, when I lay down I have leaks at my eyes and sometimes around my mouth.  If I am laying down looking straight at the ceiling, I have to remember to tilt my head slightly up as if there was more pillow under my neck than under my head.  I tighten the straps really tight though.  Enough so that the harder rubber seal is pressed against the soft rubber seal which is then pressed against my face.  With only 4 1/2 hours of sleep a night, I guess I am tired enough to fall asleep.

Thanks for your suggestions, I'm glad i'm not the only one who is having problems. I got somewhere today with a different RT, but she was totally rude. Her reply was "we can't keep doing this." (like i've switched masks so many times, this is my 2nd mask.) She made me feel like I was calling trying to get narcotics or something. I told her "excuse me, but this is something I need to wear every night of my life, and I need to find one that is comfortable." Supposedly i'm still in my time frame to do one last try switch, then I will have to wait 3 months to get a new one. I can't believe how incredibly rude this lady was today. She completely didn't want to be bothered with me. But at least I can try something else, and hope it works. I dread going in there tomorrow. I mean do they think I "enjoy" wearing a mask every night to bed. Give me a break.

Post Mirage Quattro the Pits
I have used a nasal mask since 1989. In 2002 I bought a Resmed Mirage Activa. A great mask for sleep apnea people. Late 2007 a new problem started I was snoring even while wearing the Activa. Air was leaking through my mouth and resulted in dry tongueand mouth So sleep clinic fitted me with a Resmed Quattro with my S6 on 13cms pressure. Despite all the wonderful state of the art swivel to adjust the quattro to fit better, the mask leaked 83% one night and was screaming and I was just plain tired of trying to fix it in my bed and in my sleep without disturbing my wife. What use is a mask that leaks 80% ???

So another technician explained that first of all I needed a humidifier and also may be better of with an auto setting. I tried the Respironics machine with humidifier and did not like it as I could never tell if the humidifier had water or not. One night I slept with no water in the humidifier and burnt my throat..

So I tried out the quattro with an S8 elite autoset machine with pressure range from 6 to 13.
starting pressure of six was too low and had me gasping for air.

Last week I went to Resmed with my complaint and they are now doing a study of my sleep. They have hired me a s8 Elite auto set with humidifier and the technician agreed that I was better off going back to using the Activa with the S8 on auto and a humidifier. I asked him to set the pressure range from 8 to 13.

I am now sleeping like a baby and surprised myself by waking up as early as 5.00am and feeling rested.

So the activa is a great mask. The quattro is a poor design for a full face. Respironics have released a brand new Comfort get full face mask which could be better. Unfortunately while it is being sold in USA now I am told it will take a few months to come to Australia..

Leaks could be a problem at fixed pressure settings as while that pressure is the max required we may not need it 95% of the time. when we do not require the g=high pressure it is better to be on lower pressure and minimise the leaks and this is achieved by the autosetting.

Activa, S8 elite on Auto with humidifier may be the solution. I now have a Respironics Comfort curve ade available to me by Respironics. This I believe is a great mask design and suitable for lower pressures like 10cms or lower. Most comfortable and elegant unit and allows you to sleep on your sides and no strapping round the neck that gives neck pain.

OH Technicians will never admit the Quattro is a bad design. One lady told me I was wearing the mask too lose and hence the leak. another technician told me I was wearing it too tight.
No win situation and sure we feel like tossing the quattro in the bin. The irony is a bad product gets nominated by Resmed for an Australian Design award. Shame on Resmed

Ram, my dme guy told me that his company no longer keeps the Quattro in stock, there are just too many problems with it.  I can get it, but it has to be special ordered.  I am thinking about the hybrid for next time, I don't like things near my nose, but it's worth a shot. Virginia

Not long before you find my super duper mask designed by an engineer who has worn third rate masks for 20 years and paid the price. Some one should write to Resmed that retailers do not even keep Quattro on the shelves because Resmed believes thy have a winner and are seeking an Australian design award for the Quattro. Obviously they are oblivious to feedback from customers

Quattro is any day better than the Liberty. The nasal cushions seldom stay in place especially under high pressure. Liberty is just a bad copy of the Hybrid that is not available in Australia.

The hybrid is a better design but for the chin support that causes more problems. I have heard a few people have cut the chin support off.

Not long before you get to try Rambo's dream mask.
Should I call it Dream or Freedom ?

I use the same mask also. I started 4 weeks ago. The only way I got it to not leak and not wake up with the "farting" noises is to put it on, turn on the machine at the pressure I am at, and flip around in bed in all the positions I lay tightening it as I did. I am sure I am wearing it way too tight, but I have been feeling much better during the day since I made it tighter. I thought I would never get used to it as I am a stomach sleeper, but now it's like second nature to me.

I use the Quattro, but I don't use the headgear that came with it.
I use the headgear from my Hybrid, when using the headgear that comes with the Quattro it is hard to to seal but not with the Hybrid headgear.
