Post Very restless nite during sleep study
Has anyone ever had this problem. Couldnt get comfortable. Kept tossing and turning and the tech must have come in about 10 times to put cables that came off back on.  I said to the tech how did i do he said i had a rough nite. He kept telling me he was concerned about the temperature in the room but it was fine. Is there such a thing as failing a sleep study

Thanks

Bellagio - my first sleep study night was a desaster - I only got a total of about 3 hours of sleep, but apparently that was enough, because I'm scheduled for the 2nd night tonight.  this time with the CPAP machine.  Good luck to both of us.

yes some stay wide awake all night but you may be lucky as not all that much sleep is needed, but you can always go back and its easier next time

Bellagio,

It takes much less time to determine if you have OSA than people think.  Almost always when people think they didn't sleep enough, they have slept plenty.  When do you go back to see the doc?

Same for me.

I thought I hardly slept at all.  Then when I saw the report I was surprised to find I actually slept for several hours.

Both of my sleep lab studies were terrible. My knees ached, I was getting needle like shooting pains in my feet & legs. I couldn’t find a comfortable sleeping position in the narrow hospital bed and the tech kept coming in to reattach stuff. I did occasionally get those needle like pains in my feet due to my diabetes but never like this. I thought that the wires were picking up some stray static electricity and acting like some sort of activation of acupuncture points. The room was extremely dry and an air duct right over the bed was blowing like crazy which could raise the static electricity level in the vicinity. Finally, as I learned later, one of the wires on my legs fell off and the tech decided to let me fall asleep, which I did.

The result was that the first study showed that I had severe apnea and the second study resulted in a script for a CPAP. The good news is that as a result of using the CPAP my blood O2 saturation has improved sufficiently that I now have very little of those needle like sensations. Hopefully with prolonged use the nerve damage that was occurring to my feet will be repaired, but at least it won’t get worse.

I had my sleep study 2 nights ago and I too was very restless and I thought and felt as if I hardly slept at all, about an hour maybe.  I called for them to unhook me cuz when I woke I needed a pee break.  No answer, so I looked at my cell and realized it was 6 am and in my estimation, which turned out to be pretty dang close, I had slept for 4 hours.  Weird thing is, the rooms at the sleep lab have no windows.  They must not want you to have any idea of timing. 4 hours was enough to get what they needed.  I have to go back for a titration sleep study in 3 weeks.   Applause

Same with me.  They even ask you how many times did you wake up ?  Did you dream and how long did you sleep ?

That is the entire problem with the disease, we actually have no idea how long we sleep.  Now on my CPAP and can look and see :)

During my titration I knew I fell asleep because I dosed off with the machine at like 4 and when I woke up at the end of the test it was at 14 and howling like crazy and I just remember smiling becuase I did not remember a thing because at LAST, I WAS SLEEPING. (huge grin)

Hearing this, I hope I have results like that at my titration and beyond.  I am miserable, between the apnea at night and waking up with my allergies in the AM.  I have my titration 2 weeks from Tuesday and at first, I was nervous, but hearing more and more positive results is making me feel VERY hopeful.

I wish you the best and hope you have results like I have achieved.  I was nervous also and I was convinced that, "NO Way was I wearing a mask and looking like Darth Vader" but the surgery statistics are not that great and it can be painful, so I decided to give it a try.  Like your first test, its difficult to sleep in a sleep lab.  In my first test I was uncomfortable and I did not know if I fell asleep or not and when I asked, the tech just smiled.  I don't think they are supposed to help you since they give you some questions when the test is done.

Now about the second test.  I did not think I would be able to sleep with a mask.  She put it on and my first impression is that is was comfortable, (Mirage Swift II) Pillow system (She said it works good on patients with a deviated septum).  The only thing I would mention is that since I did not know how the mask looked or worked, I wish I would have known that the tube can go in front as well because she put it on the left side of my face and that is the side I like to sleep on and as a result I could not put my face on the pillow.  She may have done that on purpose because they want you to try to sleep on your back to get a worse case scenario.

Now the amazing news.  I awoke at about 6:30 am the sun was just coming up and she came back in the room (I think she may of had to actually wake me up) (huge grin) and I tried to speak and say hello but the machine was at 14 and well, forget about speaking with it on that pressure setting (its an odd sensation the air pressure goes through your mouth if you open it and it just feels strange)  I have of course learned you can speak with it on and very high but its still strange and clearly its not designed to speak with it on and turned up.

Well I got home and was telling my wife about the experience and I had some breakfast and was feeling WONDERFUL.  I felt like that movie Awakenings (1990) about a group of patients that are in a coma and the Doctor gave some of them a drug and they briefly come out of the coma they have been in for 30 years.  I just hope my results are not like the movie and last a life time (In the movie the drug fails and they slowly go back into their comas).

Later that day my wife and my son said, hey Dad your so full of energy and look different.  I got so excited about the results that I wanted my results and a CPAP machine ASAP.  I could not find a good DME and they all tell you next week, next month, need to wait for your results etc.

I did not accept that and wrote letters and called all over the State.  I found a DME that would rent me one out of my pocket for $350 a month and I did not care I ran there.  I had the lab fax the results to them also.

I have been on the machine 2 weeks now and feel AMAZING.  I hope you have similar results.  My Apnea was severe and my AHI was 77 and my blood oxygen level was dropping to %65.  Now the machine reports my AHI at 5.5 (down from 10 two weeks ago) appears to be coming down slowly).

Best of luck, don't be nervous the technology is amazing and it makes a major difference.  I would be inclined to say in my opinion its life altering.  I know the key is compliance and today for the first time, I woke up at 7:00 am but wanted a little more sleep but did not put it back on and my wife woke me up and smiled and said, Honey we like you better with it on (We all sleep better too) LOL !

Let us know how it goes for you !
