Post Sleep Study Result assistance
I've just received the result of my sleep study and am wondering what this paragraph means:

Quote:
RESPIRATORY EVENT DATA
During the initial monitoring duration, the patient was noted to have evidence of moderate snoring.  He was monitored at that duration for a total of 135 minutes without any episodes of REM sleep and had a total of 130 obstructive apneas and 117 hypopneas with an apnea/hyponea index of 122.1/hr.  There was evidence of significant oxygen desaturation mostly secondary to respiratory events.

The rest of the report shows how I was significantly better when placed on a CPAP at 9cm.  I remember my sleep tech telling me that I was averaging 35 apneas per hour, but the above (from the doctor) seems much higher.  Any idea why?

Either way - I join the hoseheads tonight.  Wish me luck.

Hi there, and welcome!

Did you have a split night study?  By that I mean was it all done in one night?  Most people have two studies -- the first is the baseline diagnostics looking for existence of sleep apnea, the second is when they repeat the study testing you with cpap.  You may have had had both in one night.

I don't know why the tech told you a lower average, it might depend on when and how the study is scored.  If it was a split night study, the average is a preliminary count.  Plus the tech might not have been counting everything.  But you're right, it's bad no matter how you look at it.  And it's in the severe category.  Mild apnea is 5-15 per hour; moderate is 15-30; severe is 30 or more per hour (some labs consider 25 or more as severe).

So welcome to the club!   Very Happy

Linda

So, Charlie, how did you do last night, your first night on CPAP? Which brand and model of CPAP machine do you have? Which mask and mask style do you have? Do you have a humidifier w/your CPAP setup? What kind? Heated or passover?

Life is gonna be so much better once you get acclimated to restful sleep again!!!
