Post New VPAP User - whistling??
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with a high-pitched whistling sound coming from the machine itself?  When I have the humidifier on and mask,  the whistle is only when I exhale.   I took it in to my RT today, who indeed heard the whistle.  THen he took the humidifier off and you could hear a constant whistle from the port on the machine.  He said he has only given out 3 other VPAPs and never had experienced this (and he didnt have another VPAP to try) ---I was wondering if anyone knows if this is "normal" or if it could be a defect in the machine.
I have only been using this for a week and am in the process of trying out several differnt masks, as I am quite uncomfortable...Its bad enough to not be able to sleep due to the mask, but the whistling is just plain annoying!  THanks so much in advance for any opinions!  K.

I too have a VPAP.  It makes a very quiet, whistle type sound, but it is not loud enough to worry about.  It doesn't disrupt my sleep or my husband's.

Do you use the Resmed VPap Adadt SV?

Yes I have the ResMed VPAP Adapt SV - The whistle on mine is quite loud.  I have to live with it until the RT gets another one to see if mine has a problem.
I am relieved to have come across this support forum.  I went through 3 sleep studies - months in between to be diagnosed with Obstructive and Central Sleep Apneas.  I have been having trouble with the mask (I think its an Mirage Micro) so he gave me 2 different ones to try.  It's hard getting used to.  I am 31, married with a 2 year old and exhausted almost every second of every day.   I hope this VPAP will help me

Forneyfrau,
I was looking at some of the posts so far -  I noticed that you said your doc thought of you as a novelty -  Me too!  I had to go thru 3 studies.....They said I had a lot of central apneas as well as obstructives and they couldnt understand why I had the centrals...Im "quite unique" is all that was said and they dont see it that much in someone my age.  They said I was not getting any quality of sleep -
I was diagnosed awhile ago with Hypertension  -  Hypothyrodism - endometriosis & PCOS and extreme fatigue.  I was a walking zombie each day and just got so depressed.  I have been having troubles for years and thank goodness ONE doctor recommended me having a sleep study.  I have been absent minded, unable to concentrate -  I felt like I was falling apart.  One day at the grocery store I started rifling through someone else's cart confused as to how half of these groceries got into my cart!  Only to find out it wasnt MINE!
As a new VPAP user as of a week --- Im getting frustrated because it seems like Im struggling more NOW than before trying to get used to sleep positioning and fighting with the masks!
This is such a great forum to have found!

don't give up hope,  I've been using the vpap for about 2 weeks and it was tough at first but now I'm sleeping soundly.  I was a tummy sleeper and its been an adjustment to sleep on my sides.  Your story sounds like mine. I'm an otherwise healthy female of 45 years with a serious form of complex apnea. There was no other explanation. My blood pressure was always elevated at doc visits and the ENT was the first to suggest apnea . My snoring had bothered my spouse and that's the reason I went to the ENT.  I teach and thought that was the explanation for my total, all out exhaustion. I was relieved to find out that there was a reason for it.  So what was your ahi? Mine was a high 93. I was encouraged to get the treatment real soon. When do you return to the doc for a follow up?  I am feeling a bit better. I remember dreaming now and can stay awake longer without being dragged to bed. That's an improvement! Hope you will find a way to sleep. Try wearing the mask while watching tv awhile. Get used to breathing with it. Try to be calm and relaxed.  I know its tougher for you with a younger child. Mine are 13 and 21! Keep me updated.

I just posted something on another topic:  aerophagia I believe is the word.  OMG!  Its 4 am here and I woke at 3am with horrific stomach pains - I had to take the mask off and get out of bed!  I took 2 Gas X and it seems to be working for now, but I am so afraid this is going to happen again.  I havent been in this much pain since Labor!  I started using the Activa mask last night and I wonder if this could have caused it.   WIth the Mirage Micro I was using before, I had a little stomach discomfort, but nothing that made me need to get out of bed and walk around at 3 in the morning.  The catch is that the Activa mask actually has beent he only mask I've liked!  But if Im gonna wake up in misery, then there is no way on earth I can use it.

I just had a VPAP titration study the Tues, night the 6th, My  regular doc called me today saying she got a copy of my sleep study and  wants me on VPAP and the the Sleeep Apnea Doctor  in Pulmonary that scheduled the test would be calling me Monday. I told her I had left instructions that I wanted the script written for the Resmed VPAP Adadt SV, she said the sleep apnea Dr. would discuss that with me on monday.  I have looked up at  the VPAP Adadt SV at the Resmed web site, and I want to get the software to be able to down load the data. Now after reading these post, Well is there a problem with this machine would the Respironics be a better choice? I would appreciate any input you may have reguarding this. Just for some back ground, I was diagnosed with SA in Jan 07, I was on CPAP, then went to BiPAP and then with BiPAP with O2,  and I have had numerous titration studies in between. Every time my CA's have been increasing. This last VPAP titration study that I had was the 6th sleep study since Jan 07.  I am hoping this VPAP will finally give me some relief, I am getting tired of being tired!  White beard
