Chapped lips and nose using nose mask

Post Chapped lips and nose using nose mask
I just finished my 2nd night with my new cpap machine and my FP406 mask.  I am sleeping well and haven't had issues there.  But, I do have a chapped nose where the mask seems to ride against and my lips are chapped.  I am guessing the chapping of my nose is "wind burn".  Anyone have any advice or tricks to prevent a red nose?
Thanks

welcome, is it a full face mask?  , may help to position it higher on the face and carefully adjust the straps

No, It is a nasal mask.

I used the F&P 406 nasal cushion mask for a time.  The 'chapped' part on your nose may not be 'wind burn' or even chapped at all, but caused by poor mask fit.  I had this problem with this mask and I never did get it adjusted so it didn't hurt and didn't leak.

Chapped lips are most likely from one of two things: 1) Air leaking downward at the base of the mask, or 2) you are mouth breathing.

If you don't have the fitting instructions for your mask, you can get them here:

  http://www.fphcare.co.nz/osa/pdf/HC406/185044117.pdf

Please see if you can get the mask to fit well without hurting your nose and not leak.  Do not continue to use a mask that is hurting your nose, the sore or wound can take many months to heal and may leave a permanent redness or impaired sensation.

If you are unable to get your mask to fit, please see your DME/mask provider and let them know.  It may very well be you need a different mask.

Do you have a fully-data-capable machine?  (One that displays your overnight leak rate and AHI.)  If you are not sure, post us your make and model machine and someone here will be able to tell you.  A high leak rate with a nasal mask often indicates mouth breathing, though it can indicate poor fit and a leaking mask as well.

Post Thank you
The fitting instructions were very helpful.  My machine is a ResMed S8 Elite and I didn't find any leakage information.  I do wear a chin strap and the chapped lips are much better.  I'll fiddle with the fitting for another night or two and then go back to the supplier.  Thanks again.

If you are not mouth breathing and can stick with a nasal...I really like the Mirage Swift Nasal II.  I have used one for 4 years without a problem.

Hi Cyndie, please ask your doc or DME to reveal the leak and AHI, the Resmed S8 Elite tracks this information.

It is 'hidden' by default but the doc or DME can 'unhide' it so you can monitor it yourself and find out if mask leaking is excessive for you.

NOTE:  Some DME's require the doctor to approve it before they will allow you to see this information.  Even though it is strictly information about your night's therapy and you can't alter your prescription in any way.  Do call your DME and see if they need the doctor to approve your request first.  Then either ask your doctor instruct you and/or give the DME the authorization to reveal it.

Blessings,

Have you tried some lip balm before you go to bed?

Post thanks to all
I'll talk to DME regarding readings.  I did use the fit test function to adjust tension on straps after putting on per the instructions.  My face is full of red marks this morning.
I'll ask about the Mirage.  I do want to stay with nasal mask.  I have to stay off my back.  That is where my mouth drops open.
Yes, I put on chapstick before bed.  My lips are no longer the problem.  Now the red marks around and on my nose and forehead.
Thanks to all.
