some full face masks can be worn upside down but they dont work properly that way, a sleep disorders professional told me

Others:

• Don't wear your eyeglasses upside down.  My eye doctor claims they will not work properly this way.
• Do not attempt to steer your car with your feet. A mechanic told me this is a bad idea.
• You should not try to dry your clothes in the oven.  A repairman told me this will not work.
• Doing handstands in the shower is generally a bad idea.  An ER nurse tip.

         

Assuming that it will properly seal, why won't a full face mask work if it is worn upside down?

I saw a piece on TV, I think that it was 60 Minutes, about a lady with no arms who steered her car with her feet.  As a matter of fact she did lots of amazing things with her feet; she even folded clothes and cooked using her feet.

I have tried to dry clothes in the oven, it doesn't work.  I have used a microwave to dry clothes; it works quite well as long as there is no metal in the clothes and you take them out frequently and shake them.

I haven't seen them all, but I can't figure out how a person could put a ff mask on upside down.  All of the ones I've used have forehead pieces, it would be hard to get it wrong , unless the person had a bit too much to drink.  Virginia

oh, I'm not shooting you down. I just don't think that that's possible, at least not now. Maybe a few years ago, when the masks were first on the market they were styled differently.  The new ones are narrow at the top, with a forehead piece above the mask. the bottom part is wide, if you put it on upside down it wouldn't cover your mouth at all, and you'd have a piece of plastic hanging at your chin .  Does anyone know of a ff mask that could be put on upside down?  Virginia

I would try mine sideways, backwards if that would control the leaks. I have an Ultra Mirage FF on loan to try out. I have only been doing this CPAP thing for about a week now. This mask is reasonably comfortable but the leak rates are way up, last night at 1.52 and the night before at 1.76L/s. I adjusted as instructed in the User Guide and had to keep tightening to stop the leaks. This seemed to work OK while I was awake, the problem appears to develop while I sleep…grr.

The tech said to try the mask for at least a week before trying something else. I’m switching to the Respironics ComfortFull 2 tonight. I hope that one works better but just trying it on does not feel as comfortable. O well, I’ll keep at this mask roulette.

I have the same problem with  leaks.  I'm a problem leaker, I'm ashamed to admit.  I deal with it by appying a mack's silicone ear plug to the bottom portion of the mask.  I roll it up like a snake, then flatten it out, and put it on the bottom part. This keeps it from slipping up my face in the middle of the night.  It's kind of hit and miss, I still have leak problems sometimes, but its a lot less.  Virginia

Hi Virgina57,
I have a beard. How do you think mack's silicone ear plug would work with a beard? Would it get all gummed up in my facial hairs and be impossible to remove? I have had this beard since I was in my early 20s. I don't know what I look like without it & would probably scare myself if I looked in the bathroom mirror in the middle of the night. I'll try everything else before considering shaving some or all of it off.

I don't know, but I don't think they would gum up too bad.  I have a lot of hair, and whenever the hair gets stuck on it, I can peel it off real easy.  You can usually find a small pack of 2 pair for about 2 bucks, it would be worth a try.  Or get the 6 pair pack for 4.50 and give them to your wife to use if you can't get the leaks under control.  Virginia
