Post First week CPAP therapy numbers
Could someone please let me know what these numbers mean and if I am responding well to CPAP therapy? I was diagnosed with severe OSA (>56 arousals/hour). I have a Remstar Pro M Seriex CFLEX machine with humidifier. The first week's data from the Encore Viewer software is as follows:
Average OSA index: 1.2
Average Hypopnea index: 1.0
Average AHI: 2.2
Average Vibratory Score: 10.4
Average Max Leak: 98.3
Average 90% Leak: 56.9
Average Leak: 46.1
Average Large Leak: 3 minutes, 8 seconds

Your help is most appreciated. I think I am doing very well...

Hi ktpaes,

I have been on CPAP for about a month, so I can't call myself an expert, but here are my thoughts.  Your AHI looks great.  My understanding is that anything under 5 is good.  If you had a AHI of 56 in your study and it has gone down to 2.2.  you are doing very well.  Mine has been sitting at about 8, and I am feeling better every day.

For me, the question has been the number of hours I have the mask on.  I tend to wake up with the mask off, especially when I have allergy episodes.  So, if you are sleeping with the mask on all night, (you can tell if you wake up in the morning and it is still on!)  and have an AHI of 2.2, you are doing well indeed.

You may want to call the company you got your mask from and ask them what the leak rate should be.  I have two masks, and they each have a different expected leak rate.    Not sure what the rest of your numbers mean.

Good luck!!

Post understanding data on Elite
I have borrowed a ResMed Elite CPAP machine for two weeks to try to get a handle on my leaks and apneas.  I can access the efficacy data but am not sure what the numbers mean. The manual doesn't even mention that function of the machine so I can't look it up.  This is what it looks like:
4/11 10.2 Pressure (I forgot to write down the number of hours for the first two days but I know it was ten hours the first night.)
       Leak 0.00
       Total AHI 7
        AI 4.6
        HI 2.4
4/12 Leak .02
       AHI 5.6
       AI 2.3
        HI 3.3
4/13 6:31 hrs
        Leak 0.06
        AHI 7.6
        AI 3.8
        HI 3.8

It looks like the leaks are minimal.  would .02 mean it leaked 2% of the time? What would be a significant leak number? Is the AHI the incidents for the whole night or is that a per hour average?  How can you have .6 of an apnea incident?  I guess the AI is the apneas and HI would be hypopneas?

I am recovering from flu so I have coughed a few times before falling asleep. Would coughing be perceived as an apnea?
Thanks!
Grandma
