 MIRAGE QUATTRO LEAKS
I have owned this mirage quattro for about 4 months and it started leaking bad at the elbow, so I use teflon tape and it seems to have stopped the leak there, but is still leaking at the top around the eyes. I have to tighten it down a lot to get it to stop, leaving marks on my face and a headache. I have made a point to clean it every day and make sure its dry before use. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks rich.

I like the "Breeze" setup. It only has the "pillows" to introduce air into your nostrels, thus keeping your nasal passages open all night. With the masks, the air pressure is on both sides of your nose. And with me, my nostrels tend to close during the night without the extra pressure on the insides.

If you find a way to stop the leaks on the Quattro, be sure to let us know how you did it. Mine leaks around the bottom instead of the eyes. I wear it way too tight. It's getting so I avoid going to bed because I can't face the nightly air leak battle. My respiratory therapist says my leaks are not that bad. As he told me that, the bottom was totally gushing air, WIND down my front.
As for the elbow. I emailed ResMed and they immediately sent me a new elbow and the hard plastic part of the mask. Unfortunately this one leaks even worse than the first one. I have to get out the teflon tape again.
When I was titrated using an Ultra Mirage FF mask (I think that's what it was) I don't remember any leaks and my AHI was zero. Even from the short time I slept with the mask, I felt better the next morning. Since then, I have fought with leaks constantly and feel tired all the time. I cannot sleep on my back at all because I wake up snoring and gushing air.
I was supposed to see my sleep dr. and RT again last week but, as luck would have it, I got flu. I am hoping to get in this week. They promised me the loan of an Elite so I can track leaks and AHI.
I wish you luck with with the Quattro. Do you notice any improvement in how you feel, other than headache?

Grandma, you may be adjusting the top straps too tightly. When you do that, the mask will shift downwards and cause leaks at the chin. Use the macks silicone ear plugs at the chin to fill in the gaps, tighten the bottom so it doesn't shift on you, then loosen the top straps , making sure you don't have leaks around your eyes. You might need to adjust the straps so it sits a bit further down on your forehead. I don't know what to tell you if you have leaks at both the eyes and the chin. Have a good day, Virginia

Thanks, Virginia,
I will try to make some adjustments again. Sometimes if I loosen the top straps even a tiny bit, I get leaks by my eyes. I guess I would rather have chin leaks than eye leaks. But it would be great not to have any! Macks plugs do not work well for me. I think my skin is so oily that it breaks the seal they create and I have a hard time getting the residue off the mask. I do use them when I am desperate, though. The oily skin may also be why I develop the leaks in the first place, usually after several hours of sleep. I wash the mask faithfully every day and wash my face every night (no creams or moisturizers) but I am still losing the battle of the leaks. I will keep on keeping on, however. Every day is a new day.

Maybe you could ask a dermatologist to give you ideas to treat the oily skin? It would be worth a shot. Virginia

Another good idea, Virginia. I believe that my oily skin is caused by having to take flaxseed and fish oil for my dry eye condtion (doctor's orders). It gives you nice, soft skin along with a leaky-mask problem. Sometimes I feel like a rat in a maze. Can anybody identify?

I started using the Resmed Mirage Quattro on 13th Dec 2007. I have persisted except for a few days when I switched back to the Resmed Activa in disgust and a few days when I tried out the Resmed Mirage Liberty. Liberty is not for me.
Activa is my favourite but for mt mouth leaks and snoring.
As for the Quattro. It is quite a nightmare and the damn thing leaks like a sieve. One night the leak was as high as 85% according to the print out. Average leakage is about 35% which I am told is not bad considering other patients have leaks as high as 50%.
I believe this mask should be taken out of the market so that sleep apnea sufferers like us all could try other brands that I believe may not leak as much.
Most of us find it difficult to accept that we have sleep apnea and have to wear a mask for the rest of our lives. Little did we know that the battle of the masks would also continue for he rest of our lives.
Surely we deserve better as sufferers.

I have been using a Mirage Quattro for about six months and am happy with it.
It took some fiddling around to get the forehead setting and strap tightness adjustments right, but it doesn't leak much at all.
I found that the forehead setting needs to be at a lower number (8 for me) than I thought it should be when I started.
A couple of times when I thought the swivel was leaking it was actually exhaust air hitting the hose and deflecting back. Shifting the hose to one side fixed it.

It's one of the most popular masks on the market, works great for a lot of people, and because it doesn't fit your particular facial configuration it should be taken off the market?

Don't have any personal experience with the Quattro. But, after a lot of adjustment, you find that you just cannot get the thing to fit correctly and decide to go with another full face mask, give the Fisher and Paykel HC431 or HC432 a try.
I LOVE this mask. Haven't had it too long, but it works great for me. When the DME rep came to my house, she decided I needed a medium size in the sealing silicone part. I tried in vain for a couple nights to get it to work for me, but nothing did. I decided to try the large sized silicone part, and what a difference! No leaks around the eyes, or the chin. Of course, I had to make a couple adjustments with the straps.
TIP: If you do end up getting the 431/432, make sure you sleep clean shaven, or you WILL have leaks (or at least I did!).

Clay.I am glad it works for you.
Unfortunately it does not work for me and I still love my Activa Nasal Mask which is a great design but I am beginning to snore again as air is leaking through my mouth. Activa plus duct tape might be an option. But Ouch I have a mo and a beard that are there to stay
The forehead silicone pad leaves a butterfly imprint with two pimples on my forehead every morning and lasts for about two hours. The Quattro also has created two burrows on either side of my nose going to the corner of my lips on both sides and this burrow is becoming semi permanent.
I am sure you are going to tell me that I am tying it too tight. It is not just me the technician has tried to assist a few times and in order to stop the leak it has to be tied tight and this also gives neck pain.
I am told Resprionics is bring out a new full face comfort gel mask in a couple of months. Cannot wait to try it on.

I have heard the same thing here in Canada about a FF Respironics gel mask but the homecare consultant was dubious about the release date. I looked all over the Respironics web site but found nothing. Has anyone else heard anything?

Respironics full face gel mask has not been released yet. Believe it may be sometime this month and I have put my name down to test the product.
I cannot understand why the Quattro is not working for me and why I get these dull headaches which I never had when I used the nasal mask Activa. It is 10.15 am and I am feeling zonked tired and sleepy after seven hours in bed with the quattro.

The X-S quattro Mirage is working for my 8yo. It is the only FF mask small enough for my child to use. I like how adjustable it is on her, although she has a mark on the bridge of her nose. She is very happy and has no problems with her "mask kiss". When she gets it just right I mark where the straps end so we can always get it right again. I also like how quiet it is compared to her first mask.
I'm sorry it did not work for you, but everyone is different and removing it from the market would leave my child up a creek so to speak.
