Post My sleep study report
I received my sleep study report today.

The basics: Split night study, baseline sleep efficiency 62%, AHI 17.6, longest event 19 seconds (average 14 seconds), lowest O2 87%.

Pre Tx
Stage I 20.3%
Stage II 55.0%
Stage III/IV 24.7%
REM 0.0%

Post Tx
Stage I 27.8%
Stage II 67.9%
Stage III/IV 0.5%
REM 3.8%

During the titration, I had some central apneas at the lower pressures (5-9).

Recommendation:
CPAP at 12 cm. If excessive daytime sleepiness persists after 2 weeks of treatment, increase by 1 cm, and do this in a similar progressive fashion until the patient is asymptomatic.

Also noted infrequent PVCs.

Any comments?

Your AHI is in the moderate sleep apnea range. You had a very low percentage of REM sleep, and a lower than normal sleep efficiency, but that is not unusual because you usually don't sleep as well as normal during a sleep study due to wires and getting used to the CPAP and just not being in your own bed.  You also had more of the deeper stages of sleep (III/IV) before they put the CPAP on, but that's not unusual because CPAP takes some getting used to. Your stage I sleep percentage (The lightest stage of sleep) is a little on the high side, also probably from the wires CPAP and strange bed.

The order to increase your pressure if symptoms persist may mean they aren't 100% sure they got your pressure right, or it may be something this particuar doctor always says in their report to avoid you having to come back for a retitration unless absolutely necessary. Sometimes daytime sleepiness symptoms persist until you get 100% used to the CPAP, so if you are still having symptoms at 2 weeks, but you know you aren't used to the CPAP yet, you may want to ask the doc if you should hold off on having the pressure increased until you're sleeping well with the machine.

Hope this helps.
Donna

I've read that sleep apnea may be worse during REM sleep. Since I got so little REM sleep during the study, perhaps there is some uncertainty about the pressure. I may need a higher pressure to eliminate apneas during REM sleep, but they weren't able to determine that during the study.

Thanks for your comments.

Another part of the report:

From the Physician Diagnostic Interpretation:
"A total of 24 periodic leg movements is counted with 3 associated with arousals; no Rx indicated."

Data:
Number of Periodic Leg Mvts   24
Periodic Mvts w/ Arousals   3
Periodic Mvts w/ Awakenings   --
Periodic Mvt Index (AVE/HR)   4.1
Periodic Mvt Arousal Index   .5

It looks like I had a period of about 10 minutes where I had a lot of leg movements shortly after I fell asleep. No other leg movements during the diagnostic stage of the test.

Another item:
Wake After Sleep Period:  0.5 minutes

Does that mean that I woke up 30 seconds after I fell asleep for the first time?
